British entrepreneur Mark Bailey has shed 177 kilograms naturally after doctors warned his extreme weight meant he would not survive urgent open-heart surgery.
The 46-year-old had reached a peak weight of 309 kilograms by the age of 39. Standing 203 centimeters tall, he had consumed an estimated 7,500 calories a day for many years before facing a critical medical ultimatum.

Bailey had experienced health complications starting at age 34, when a long-standing unbalanced diet led to severe joint problems and gallbladder issues. His health deteriorated further in October 2021 when doctors detected heart murmurs, revealing a condition that required open-heart surgery.
However, cardiologists refused to proceed immediately with the operation. Doctors deemed the surgical risk too high, fearing that Bailey would not survive the seven-hour procedure on the operating table due to his severe obesity. In medical care, extreme obesity significantly elevates risks during major thoracic operations, presenting serious challenges for general anesthesia, patient positioning, and cardiac strain.
Ditching injections for natural weight loss
To help reduce his weight quickly, medical staff offered Bailey bariatric surgery to reduce the size of his stomach, alongside weight loss injections. Bariatric procedures, which physically alter the stomach to restrict food intake, and GLP-1 style appetite-suppressing injections are common clinical interventions for patients with severe obesity.
Instead of relying on medical interventions or drugs, Bailey elected to lose the weight entirely through his own efforts. He launched a strict fitness regimen, began going on regular runs with his wife, and completely overhauled his daily diet.
His new diet focused on high-protein foods, substantial amounts of fresh fruit and vegetables, and high daily water intake. By strictly limiting his caloric consumption, Bailey managed to drop 177 kilograms through natural exercise and dietary changes alone.
Surviving six weeks from heart failure
Despite his massive physical transformation, medical evaluations in September 2025 indicated that the cardiac operation could no longer be delayed to wait for further weight loss. Bailey recalled that his surgeon warned him that his damaged heart valve had less than six weeks of operational time remaining.
The open-heart operation was scheduled for October 2025 and took seven hours to complete. The surgical procedure proved successful, and Bailey recovered rapidly enough to be discharged from the hospital eight days after surgery.
Now in 2026, Bailey has brought his weight down to 106 kilograms and continues to lose weight while actively participating in obstacle runs. Heart valve repair or replacement surgery generally requires months of rehabilitation, but successful operations allow cardiac patients to return to vigorous physical activity.
Similar cases of extreme weight loss
Bailey's story, reported by British publication the Mirror, underscores the life-threatening risks associated with severe weight gain and high calorie consumption. The report noted a similar case involving Henry Gonzalez, an American man who reached 254 kilograms before turning 30 before losing more than half of his weight.
Gonzalez admitted that prior to his weight loss, he sat motionless at work, drank alcohol on weekends until he passed out, and binged on fast food orders that were large enough to feed a family of four.
