Martha Stewart called her ex-husband Andy Stewart a jerk when asked plainly about her former spouse. The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul married the publisher in 1961, separated from him in 1987, and finalized their divorce in 1990 after nearly 30 years of marriage.
The former couple shares one daughter, Alexis Stewart, who is now 60 years old. Stewart, who recently opened up about cosmetic surgery, dished about their relationship, infidelity, and split in her 2024 self-titled Netflix documentary.
Asked by People if she had heard from her ex after the film came out, Stewart candidly replied: "Only legally, to remind me of divorce settlement statements, which I had never read. I mean, who cared after two years of arguing about a settlement? I still haven’t read it."
Infidelity and Secret Affairs
In her documentary, Stewart admitted to having an affair with a "handsome Irish man" while also accusing Andy of infidelity. She warned women to be wary of unfaithful partners, advising: "Young women, listen to my advice, if you're married and your husband starts to cheat on you, he's a piece of s**t. Get out of that marriage."
When an off-screen producer asked, "Didn't you have an affair early on?" Stewart quipped: "Yeah, but I don't think Andy ever knew about that."
At an October 2024 book event ahead of the documentary release, her friend Lee Brian Schrager joked: "If you're looking for ideas [for another book] maybe you could talk about how you [had] an affair that happened 30 years ago and you kept it a secret." When Schrager asked, "How is that possible?" Stewart answered: "Very easy - you have to be circumspect."
Stewart started dating Andy, her only husband, when she was 19 and he was 23 after they were set up on a blind date.
Dating and Current Life
These days, Stewart implied to People that she still goes out with men. She teased: "I have a very, very full - oh, probably too full! - life. I go out on... I don’t know if you call them dates or not, but I go out."
However, Stewart explained that having a partner is less important at this point in her life. She said: "The older you get, the less you really need a mate, I think. I wouldn’t want to be beleaguered with an older, ill person."
Addressing relationships with younger men, Stewart said: "I’ve done that. Been there, done that. I have lots of friends. I’m not a lonely person."
The home expert, who has authored 102 cookbooks, turned 85 on August 3 and has been celebrating with friends in Maine. She shared a photo of herself in an outdoor hot tub on Instagram, writing to her three million followers: "I am going to use this amazing hot tub every single day I am in Maine."
