Martha Stewart has apologized after sparking widespread public outrage by dressing as a homeless person to promote home goods on social media for Halloween.

The 85-year-old lifestyle mogul, who holds an estimated net worth of $400 million, posted an image on Saturday showing herself wearing torn clothing with dirt smeared across her face while holding a sign reading, "I AM HUNGRY HELP ME!!"

Accompanying the picture was an explicit promotional caption for her commercial product line: "My QVC candles are perfect for Halloween!!!!!"

After facing swift online backlash, Stewart quickly deleted the post. She initially attempted to defend the costume, claiming the outfit had been an effort to raise awareness about homelessness.

As public criticism intensified, Stewart issued a second apology admitting that her initial response "didn't go far enough." She acknowledged that the get-up was "insensitive and not funny."

Criticism From Former Colleagues

The incident has alarmed longtime friends and former colleagues, who told columnist Rob Shuter that the display reflects a troubling pattern of behavior and a desperate bid to remain relevant.

One former associate, who worked with Stewart for seven years and remains friendly with her, said the controversy highlighted a loss of self-awareness in her public persona.

"The problem isn't that the public misunderstood the joke," the insider told Shuter. "The problem is that there wasn't a funny joke to begin with."

The source noted that while Stewart was historically known for being demanding, her intimidating style was previously accompanied by wit and humor.

"The old Martha could be terrifying, but there was always a twinkle in her eye," the insider said. "She knew she was a character and enjoyed playing that character. Now, it feels like the twinkle has disappeared. All we're seeing is the attitude without the charm."

Office Culture and Demanding Standards

Shuter recalled his own meeting with Stewart years earlier, when he was invited to her Chelsea office in New York City to discuss a potential job. Stewart had liked his work handling media relations for designer Kate Spade.

Fifteen minutes before Stewart entered the meeting, her driver called ahead to announce her imminent arrival. The office went into lockdown in a scene Shuter compared to Miranda Priestly preparing to descend in The Devil Wears Prada.

Shuter said he found the moment hilarious, as did Stewart herself. While quirky, larger than life, and dictatorial, her staff adored her because she was in on the joke.

Catering Origins and Federal Conviction

Stewart built her fortune from a working-class background through intense work ethic and intelligence, starting a catering business from home before expanding it into a global media empire.

Her career has also faced major legal battles. In 2004, Stewart was convicted of conspiracy, obstruction, and lying to investigators regarding her sale of stock in a biopharmaceutical company in an alleged insider trading scheme.

Following her sentencing outside the courthouse, Stewart remained defiant about her future. "I'll be back. I will be back," she told reporters at the time. "I'm used to all kinds of hard work, as you know, and I'm not afraid. I'm not afraid whatsoever."

Stewart served five months in prison at the Federal Prison Camp in Alderson, West Virginia, followed by five months of home confinement and two years of supervised probation. She also settled civil insider trading charges with the Securities and Exchange Commission and paid a fine.

When she was released from the West Virginia facility in 2005, she wore a handmade yarn poncho made for her by a fellow inmate, displaying a sense of humor toward federal regulators.

Public Remarks on Meghan Markle

The Halloween controversy is not the only recent moment where Stewart's public comments have raised eyebrows among observers. In August, she made pointed remarks regarding Meghan Markle, the Duchess of Sussex, who had launched her own lifestyle brand.

"If you're an actress, it's hard to then transition to a princess and then from a princess into a homemaking guru on a television show," Stewart told People magazine. "It doesn't sort of follow. So go from there."

Social Media Photos and Television Roles

Observers have also pointed to Stewart's increasingly provocative social media posts. The mogul has shared pictures of herself posing in a bathroom mirror in lacy pajamas with her decolletage bared, as well as photos pouting in swimming pools, at bars, in makeup chairs, and posing for the Sports Illustrated swimsuit issue.

An event source who has hosted Stewart several times told Shuter that her recent efforts to seek attention contrast sharply with her past allure.

"Nobody begrudges Martha wanting to look hot, she never had to work this hard to get noticed," the host said. "She was fascinating without trying."

Stewart has also made repeat guest appearances across season 16 of The Real Housewives of New York, prompting criticism that the woman who once defined sophistication is now chasing reality television exposure.

Documentary Claims and Marital History

Stewart's personal history drew renewed attention in a 2024 Netflix documentary, which featured her claims about alleged infidelity by her former husband, Andy Stewart. The couple divorced in 1990 and reportedly have not spoken since.

"I don't know how many different girlfriends he had... but I think there were quite a few," Stewart said in the film. "If you're married and you think you're happily married, and your husband starts to cheat on you, he's a piece of sh*t. Look at him as a piece of sh*t and get out of it, get out of that marriage."

Andy Stewart's current wife released a statement in 2024 addressing the remarks, calling that period a "dark" chapter of his life and describing his marriage to Martha Stewart as "painful and abusive."

In the documentary, an off-camera interviewer reminded Stewart that she had also engaged in an affair early in their marriage.

Stewart brushed off the infidelity as minor. "I had a very brief affair with a very attractive Irishman, and it was just nothing," she said. "It was nothing... I would have never broken up a marriage for it. It was nothing."

Commentators and associates note that while Stewart was never known as an agreeable figure, her recent public choices risk turning a respected tastemaker into a punchline.
