ITV News presenter Mary Nightingale fought back tears on live television as she announced the death of country music legend Dolly Parton at age 80.
The 63-year-old newsreader was delivering the breaking story during the 6.30pm programme on Tuesday evening when viewers noticed her voice breaking and her eyes welling up as she read the report.
Nightingale appeared noticeably shaken by the news, telling audience members just before a commercial break: "Just before we go to the break tonight, some very sad news I'm afraid. The country music legend Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80."
Returning from the advert break, she continued: "It's just been announced that the beloved American country singer and songwriter Dolly Parton has died at the age of 80."
Summarising Parton's career, Nightingale added: "Born in Tennessee just after the war she released her first album in 1967 and went on to have a 60 year music career. Along the way Dolly Parton won a string of Grammy and Emmy Awards, she was also an actor as well as setting up a foundation to help educate local children and tackle poverty."
Following a news package detailing Parton's life, Nightingale paused on air and remarked: "And take a deep breath..."

Confirmation of Parton's Death
The country icon's passing was officially confirmed in an Instagram video posted by her nephew Bryan Seaver, who also served as her head of security.
Parton died on Tuesday morning after being admitted on Friday to Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Nashville, Tennessee, suffering from autoimmune and kidney problems, according to TMZ.
Her loved ones had begun racing to Nashville upon hearing news of her hospitalisation the previous week, though not all were able to reach her while she was still alive.
In his video statement, Seaver revealed: "This video announcement is something Dolly asked of me years ago before I fully absorbed it as a future reality."
Paying tribute to his aunt, Seaver said she had "lived in the light" and was now "in the arms of Jesus" alongside her late husband Carl Dean, her parents, and "countless others who have watched her and longed to meet her in the heavens."
Seaver fondly remembered joining Parton on tour as a child in the 1980s, sharing that she "opened doors not just for me but for her entire family to reach the potential we didn't even know was possible."
He characterized his aunt as "a farmer, just like her daddy; he farmed the soil, she farmed songs and happiness," adding: "Dolly called me and said she wants to rest in a beautiful bed of plush cotton because after a life of wearing heavy rhinestones, she finally deserves to be comfortable and have some rest."
Final Interview and Health Woes
Parton's death followed months of health struggles that forced her to pull out of a string of public appearances and cancel a Las Vegas residency, fueling concern among fans.
The musician was pictured in her final Instagram post, uploaded on August 12. Just four days before her death, an interview was published by People magazine in which Parton spoke about her health and plans.
In the interview, Parton declared she still had "so many things I want to achieve" and vowed to keep "working as long as I can to see everything come to life."
She explained that she had been grappling with "some health issues that I just didn't pay attention to when I was watching over Carl."
Early Life in the Great Smoky Mountains
Born in Pittman Center, Tennessee, on January 19, 1946, Parton was the fourth of 12 children born to her parents.
She grew up in the Great Smoky Mountains alongside her 11 siblings: Willadeene, David Wilburn, Coy Denver, Bobby Lee, Stella Mae, Cassie Nan, Randel Huston 'Randy', Larry Gerald, twins Estel Floyd and Freida Estelle, and Rachel Ann.
The family lived in rustic conditions with no running water, gas, or electricity, sleeping on mattresses filled with straw.
Developing a passion for music at an early age, Parton sang regularly on local radio stations and appeared on East Tennessee television broadcasts as a child before releasing her debut single, Puppy Love, at age 13.
Over a career spanning six decades, Parton won 11 Grammy Awards and three Emmy Awards, while also starring in feature films and launching a charitable foundation to help educate local children and tackle poverty.
Stories Behind Jolene and Whitney Houston Hit
Among her most enduring songs was the 1973 hit Jolene, which Parton acknowledged was partly inspired by a bank clerk who flirted with her late husband Carl Dean.
In a 2008 interview with NPR, Parton recalled: "She got this terrible crush on my husband. And he just loved going to the bank because she paid him so much attention."
She added: "It was kinda like a running joke between us," recalling how she would tease him about spending so much time at the bank when they did not have that kind of money.
Addressing the audience at the Glastonbury Festival years later, Parton said: "I wrote that years ago when my husband... was spending a little more time with Jolene than I thought he should be. I put a stop to that. I got rid of that redhead woman in a hurry."
Her 1974 track I Will Always Love You was written about cutting professional ties with her mentor and former business partner Porter Wagoner to pursue a solo career.
The song reached the top spot of the US Billboard Hot Country Songs chart twice: first in June 1974 and again in October 1982.
Parton famously refused to let Elvis Presley record a cover version after his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, demanded half of her publishing rights.
Speaking to BBC Radio 2 in 2023, Parton recalled: "I wouldn't let Colonel Tom Parker. See, Elvis loved the song. In fact, I talked to Priscilla not very long ago. She said: 'You know, Elvis sang that song to me when we were walking down the courthouse steps when we got divorced.'"
Parton explained that Presley had already rehearsed the song and invited her to the studio, but Parker phoned the night before insisting on publishing rights. Parton recalled telling him: "This is the most important copyright in my whole publishing company, and I can't do that."
Although Parton admitted she was "heartbroken" that Presley never recorded the song, her decision paid off when Whitney Houston recorded a cover for the 1992 film The Bodyguard, creating an international smash hit that carried the soundtrack album to 18 times platinum.
