Actors Matt Damon and Pedro Pascal have scored renewed streaming success with their forgotten fantasy epic The Great Wall nearly a decade after its release.
The action feature has repeatedly ranked among the most watched movies on major streaming services, including Netflix, HBO Max, and Prime Video, despite enduring a difficult theatrical launch.
Both lead actors have recently starred in high-profile projects. Damon recently led The Odyssey, the latest cinematic release from director Christopher Nolan, while Pascal joined Marvel Studios as Reed Richards and portrayed Din Djarin in the only Star Wars film released this year.
Long before defending those blockbuster roles, the duo joined forces for a sweeping fantasy adventure that stirred intense public debate prior to its arrival in cinemas.
A Battle Along the Wall
Directed by Chinese filmmaker Zhang Yimou, The Great Wall is an epic action and fantasy feature centered on two European mercenaries traveling through ancient East Asia.
Damon stars as William Garin, while Pascal portrays his charismatic companion Pero Tovar. While searching for gunpowder in China, the charismatic duo encounters an elite military force defending the Great Wall from monstrous creatures known as the Tao Tei.
Zhang Yimou is renowned for directing martial arts masterpieces such as Hero and House of Flying Daggers. In ancient Chinese lore, the Tao Tei are mythical beasts symbolizing greed, reimagined in the film as terrifying monsters threatening humanity.
Casting Controversy and Production Troubles
Even before audiences had the opportunity to see the movie in theaters, the project generated intense controversy and divided moviegoers.
Much of the criticism focused on casting choices, particularly the central role occupied by Damon in a blockbuster set in China. The filmmaker defended the decision, explaining that William was always conceived as a character of European origin.
Damon later revealed that he had his own frustrations during filming, recognizing that he realized during production that development was not advancing as he expected.
The Great Wall also suffered from negative reviews from critics, despite being backed by a star-studded cast that included legendary actor Willem Dafoe. Dafoe is widely known for his acclaimed work across independent films and blockbusters, including Platoon and Spider-Man.
