Actress Meg Ryan made a rare red carpet appearance alongside her son Jack Quaid on Saturday night for the Narrative Art Museum opening night gala.
The 64-year-old romantic comedy star posed proudly with her 34-year-old son at the starry event. Ryan, who rose to global fame in nineties classics such as When Harry Met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle, wore a sleeveless black dress featuring an embossed monochrome floral pattern throughout. She completed the look with dark sunglasses and her signature blonde bob styled in a shaggy, tousled texture.
Jack Quaid looked handsome and fashion-forward for the evening in a double-breasted grey suit, paired with a crisp white shirt and a patterned black and grey tie.
Ryan shares Jack with her ex-husband, veteran actor Dennis Quaid. In addition to Jack, the Hollywood actress is also mother to a 22-year-old daughter, Daisy, whom she adopted from China in 2006.
The nepotism debate in Hollywood
In July 2024, Jack Quaid publicly addressed his standing as a celebrity child, often referred to in Hollywood as a nepo baby. Speaking in an interview with the Daily Beast, the actor acknowledged the distinct advantages his famous lineage provided when launching his career.
"I am an extremely privileged person, was able to get representation pretty early on, and that's more than half the battle," Jack said. He added: "I knew the door was open for me in a lot of ways that it's just not for a lot of actors. And I've just tried to work as hard as I possibly can to prove that I deserve to walk through that door."
Ryan previously defended her son against accusations of nepotism during an interview with Glamour magazine in December 2023. The actress strongly praised his natural acting talent and dedication to his craft.
"Jack is really talented. He's more of a natural than I'll ever be," Ryan told the magazine. "That nepo stuff is so dismissive of his work ethic, his gifts, and how sensitive he is to the idea of his privilege."
Addressing his mother's protective comments, Jack later offered his perspective to the Daily Beast, noting that while he appreciated her maternal support, he recognized why the industry debate remains relevant.
"My first thought was like, she's being a mom. She's being a loving mom. But I don't think she's trying to say that I'm not a nepo baby. I think she's just trying to say that, in her opinion, it undermines my talent," Jack explained.
He continued: "I don't think it undermines my talent. I know that I work hard, and I know I've heard "no" way more than I've heard "yes." But I also know that this industry is insanely hard to break into, and I had an easier time doing that than most. Both things can be true."
From Hunger Games to leading roles
Jack Quaid made his feature film debut in 2012 when he appeared in the blockbuster movie adaptation of the dystopian thriller The Hunger Games alongside Jennifer Lawrence and Josh Hutcherson.
Since his breakout role, the actor has built an impressive Hollywood resume across film and television. His major credits include roles in the 2022 Scream horror reboot, Christopher Nolan's 2023 biographical thriller Oppenheimer, and three seasons of the satirical superhero series The Boy.
His next major feature project is the upcoming comedy Close Personal Friends from Amazon MGM Studios. Jack will appear onscreen alongside Henry Golding, Oscar winner Brie Larson, and fellow celebrity child Lily Collins.
Reunion after twenty-five year split
Meg Ryan and Dennis Quaid were married in 1991 and welcomed Jack the following year in 1992. The high-profile couple eventually split in 2001 following Ryan's highly publicized affair with her Proof of Life co-star Russell Crowe.
While their bitter split was initially acrimonious, the former husband and wife are now on friendly terms 25 years after separating. The pair reunited earlier this year to celebrate Jack's wedding to Australian actress Claudia Doumit.
