Melanie Chisholm, better known as Mel C or "Sporty Spice" from the Spice Girls, has thrown her support behind Sheffield FC's women's team by sharing a video of herself wearing the club's kit as the new season gets under way.
The footage, posted on her Instagram account, shows an emotional Melanie C delighted to play her part in raising the profile of women's football. The clip quickly spread online, with fans reacting warmly to the singer's public show of support for the team.

The post is part of a wider trend of high-profile international figures using their own platforms to give visibility to women's sports projects, which are steadily gaining the recognition they deserve through sustained grassroots effort.
A bond that goes beyond music
Mel C's support for the English club appears rooted in a deep personal connection. In the caption accompanying her post, she explained that football is embedded in her identity, having grown up in Liverpool, a city where the sport is part of everyday life for its residents.
Even so, she said Sheffield holds a special place in her heart, since the city has been a crucial and defining setting across her three-decade career in the music industry. It was in Sheffield that she wrote and recorded the hit "Say You'll Be There" with the Spice Girls.
The city was also where the band played their first stadium concert, at the former Don Valley Stadium, and years later it hosted Mel C's solo debut at the well-known venue The Leadmill.
Sheffield FC, founded in 1857, is recognised as the oldest football club in the world. Combining her affection for the city with support for the club, Mel C said the connection was an honour. She said she loved the new kit and would wear it with pride, adding that she could not wait to cheer on the team from the stands.
Spice Girls mark 30th anniversary
The news of Mel C's football tribute arrives at a significant moment for Spice Girls fans. On 6 November, the group will celebrate their 30th anniversary with the release of "The Singles Collection," a box set that will bring together, for the first time, every single the band has released across their career.
The anthology is expected to be a prized item for collectors who grew up singing along to the group's hits. Alongside their acclaimed number one singles and B-sides, the project will also feature previously unreleased material.
Among the highlights is "Do You Think About Me," one of the earliest demos the group recorded before becoming the global phenomenon now known worldwide. The release is set to serve as a milestone celebration of the group's enduring legacy three decades on.
