Simon McQuoid, director of the first two 'Mortal Kombat' films, told The Wrap he is not sure he will direct a third installment.
McQuoid said he believes a third 'Mortal Kombat' film is still in development, but he is uncertain whether he will return to direct it. He said there are other stories he wants to tell that are not necessarily connected to 'Mortal Kombat.'
He said he has several projects in development, including one currently in casting that is set in the real world, focused on a deep exploration of a unique character. He said he is thrilled about that project, but never wants to close doors and always tries to keep them open.
'Mortal Kombat 2' box office
'Mortal Kombat 2' opened worldwide on May 7. The film follows champions of Earthrealm battling each other in a bloody tournament, joined this time by Johnny Cage, played by Karl Urban, star of 'The Boys.' Together they try to stop Shao Kahn's dark rule for good. The film had modest box office results, earning about $129 million on an $80 million budget.
