Will the 3rd day of independence see the light of day?

On the other hand, Will Smith, the headliner of the first film, is not part of the cast of Resurgence. The actor was demanding a salary of $ 50 million, which Fox refused. The actor later explained his absence with a schedule problem, because at the same time the film “Suicide Squad” was shot.

A feature film with a solid budget of $ 165 million, it grossed only $ 389 million at the international box office and received numerous bad reviews, some even calling it gnomes.

Is a third component now possible?

Prior to the theatrical release of the announced Resurgence, the third part of Independence Day was finally canceled by Fox. The bad results of this opus hastened the decision of franchise producer Dean Devlin, who announced in 2018 not to plan a third film. Roland Emerich himself explained that Will Smith’s absence had ruined Resurgence and that he would have done better to continue the project by suspending it when the star left.

But with Disney’s takeover of Fox in March 2019, the director’s hopes were revived. In 2020, Emerich told the site Screen rat That he had the script for the third episode, which reads:I really have a great idea to continue“.
