The fifth episode of The Last of Us just premiered, and the HBO series has added another exciting and action-packed story to the list of its many episodes already filled with these elements.
Unlike the previous one, this episode doesn’t pick up exactly where the fourth episode left off. Instead, it presents a moment when the residents of Kansas City, the city where Joel and Ellie are trapped, have taken control through a revolutionary group, who have taken it from FEDRA.
“This city belongs to the people,” a man says over a loudspeaker as he wanders the streets, as this group viciously attacks what remains of the FEDRA contingent there. It is in this scenario that we see two figures who appear briefly at the end of the previous episode interact with Joel and Ellie: Henry and Sam, well-known characters from the game. The Last of Us.
A difference can already be seen in this last scene, where we notice that the two communicate with sign language, given that Sam is deaf in the series. So, we have a new demonstration of Kathleen’s cruelty, and discover more about this extraordinary character in this sector of the series, as well as understand how far she is capable of going to get what she wants.
The episode fills some gaps created by what was seen in episode 4, such as the participation of the doctor and how Henry and Sam arrived at the hideout found by Kathleen, their relationship and also why they finally left gone.
The sibling duo and Joel and Ellie’s story begin to overlap, until we see how the four of them arrived at the situation at the end of the previous episode, which is now presented from Henry and Sam’s point of view. An unexpected alliance soon begins to form, despite Joel’s distrust. As Sam and Ellie seem to bond, Joel and Henry discuss a far-fetched plan involving underground tunnels to leave the city and get away from the danger posed by Kathleen’s group.
As the four make their way through the underground tunnels of Kansas City, we learn more about Henry and Sam and why they are being pursued by Kathleen. Also, Ellie and Sam begin to form a friendship and discover more and more ways to communicate and play together. The closeness of the little ones ends up bringing the older ones closer together, who unite to keep them safe.
However, when everything seems to be resolved, an ambush surprises the group, which soon turns into a battle between life and death. Joel does everything to keep Ellie safe, even desperately, while she tries to save her new friends from an even greater threat that arises.
For all the horror of the battle, the saddest moment of the episode, and I must say the saddest moment of the entire series so far, happens after all, in an extremely shocking scene that coincides with the events of the game.
Self The Last of Us it’s about love, as the creator of the game said earlier, episode 5 features different forms of this feeling, including how love can cause more pain than anyone can handle. Unlike Episode 3, where Bill and Frank ended after long years together, The Last of Us it reminds us that endings can be sudden and extremely painful.
Character development is once again a strong point of this new chapter in the story of The Last of Uswith viewers quickly forming an attachment to these new figures, just as Ellie and Joel did too, and you can see the pain on their faces when it all goes awry, in another episode where Bella Ramsey and Pedro Pascal’s performance it is intertwined. .
The sixth episode of The Last of Us premieres on HBO and HBO Max next Sunday (7pm). The first five episodes are available on HBO Max.
