Prequel to the acclaimed X: Mark of Death, Pearl has finally arrived in cinemas across Brazil telling a story that takes place more than 60 years before
pearl, one of the most recent films by director Ti West, known for having signed several horror productions, has finally arrived in Brazilian cinemas. The plot is a prequel to X: Mark of deathwith its own identity and a lot of personality.
The film stars Mia Goth once again, a Brazilian-born actress taking an acting class. Pearl is a character with characteristics that are more than disturbing, which makes it more difficult to shock, entertain and even give a few laughs of despair.
Warning: This article may contain spoilers from Pearl!
pearl brings such disturbing moments of Mia Goth’s character that, at times, it’s impossible not to laugh, even in shock.
The protagonist is a person who is frustrated with her life and who is difficult to live with. It is as if there is a universe in her brain in which only she lives, living in her own psychopathy and opening the door to danger.
Pearl’s Dream
Young Pearl, who lives with her parents on a farm, is married and her husband is at war. The lack of social tact of the character even causes us a strangeness in relation to this information, as it is difficult to imagine her developing a romance with someone.
The relationship with his parents is not good at all and it is as if he lived in a prison run by his mother, since his father is ill and cannot do anything by himself.
The film revolves around Pearl’s dream of becoming a Hollywood star, which was just beginning, in the 1910s. The young woman, who works on the farm, got tired of admiring only the actresses she saw in movies and has decided to practice to audition for a musical. In addition to being untalented and naturally scary, the aspiring actress has to deal with her sister-in-law, who has the same desire as her.
The psychopathy of the character is transparent from the beginning to the end of Mia Goth’s performance, both by the mannerisms and by the strange moments we see in the film, but taken seriously by her, such as simulating sex with a scarecrow. But it’s when the audition denial comes that things start to get serious and Goth shows what he came for.
horror
The feature features “bloody” scenes from the start, but it’s in the second half where things start to get even weirder. Ti West manages to make us nervous by bringing scenes of horror that happen in the dark or in broad daylight, causing that nail-biting anxiety just knowing what’s coming isn’t cool.
Characterization with more colorful tones and farm settings that bring peace, and even remind you The sound of music, contrasts perfectly with the slasher whenever blood is spilled. But terror is also in every word and attitude of the protagonist, which surprises at different moments, like a frightening and integral monologue seen in the last moments of the film.
Pearl ends up discovering that the film industry also relies on pornography, and this discovery is crucial to the plot’s relationship with X: Mark of deathwhich takes place more than 60 years later pearl. Mia Goth is at her best as two characters in both films, Pearl as a young and then much older version, and Maxine, who will have even more prominence in a third film.
The trilogy ends with MaXXXinewhich will accompany the character who survived the attacks of pearl, on an adventure in Hollywood adult cinema. The feature film, also by Ti West, does not yet have a release date.
