Idris Elba goes after villain Andy Serkis in Luther: The Fallen Sun trailer

“Loooooofahhhhhh!” It’s impossible to spread news about Idris Elba’s rogue cop without first saying his name. So with that said, the news is that John Luther’s long-awaited return to Luther: the fallen sun – the first tortured detective film – is almost here, and with its big screen debut just weeks away, Netflix has finally released a full trailer. This feature film sees Elba’s rogue hero on the run, on the brink, and hunting down a killer like no other he’s faced before. All this in a day’s work, huh? Check it out below:

the fallen sun is a direct continuation of the television show, which concluded in 2019 after five seasons, and is directed by series regular director Jamie Payne and luther writer and creator Neil Cross. The film, a BBC/Netflix co-production, will see the brilliant but disgraced Elba detective Luther imprisoned behind bars as a terrifying killer, Andy Serkis’ tech psycho billionaire David Robey terrorizing London. However, as seen in the trailer, bars can only hold John Luther at bay for so long, and after an explosive escape, the red-tie renegade sets out in pursuit of a serial killer while himself being hunted by his own same ex. colleagues, led by Dermot Crowley’s DSU Martin Schenk and newcomer Cynthia Erivo.

The film has a limited theatrical release on February 24, ahead of a worldwide release on Netflix on March 10. In the meantime, you can listen to our interview with director Jamie Payne and star Andy Serkis about the film from our recent episode 550 (550!) live on the empire podcast, available now on all good and bad audio streaming platforms. Come on, then, one more time: “LOOFAHHHH!”
