15-goal match and controversial refereeing: Portuguesa and Corinthians face off again after eight years

In the history of the classic, Timão wins over Lusa

One of the oldest and most traditional rivalries in San Paolo football is back. After eight years without facing each other, Portuguesa and Corinthians will play this Sunday (12), at 16:00, at the Arena Mané Garrincha, in Brasilia, but facing different realities.

Timão dreams of titles and has started the season with good results under the command of Fernando Lázaro. Lusa, on the other hand, has returned to the San Paolo elite after seven years and is fighting against relegation. The team started the year with coach Mazola Júnior and is now led by Gilson Kleina.

The last clash between the teams was in March 2015, at the Neo Química Arena. Under Tite’s command, Corinthians defeated Portuguesa 2-0, with two goals from Malcom.

In all, Lusa and Timão have met 257 times, and the alvinegro club have an edge in the duel, having won on 143 occasions. The red-greens already have 60 wins and 54 games finished in a draw. OR THROW AWAY! separated two duels to reveal the rivalry.

RAIN RECORD AND GOAL

One of the most emblematic matches of this classic took place in 1928. In a duel valid for the Campeonato Paulista, Corinthians beat Portuguesa by 10 to 5 in the old Parque Antarctica. With fifteen goals in ninety minutes, the match averaged one goal every six minutes.

To date, this is the match in the history of the Campeonato Paulista with the most goals.

POLEA WITH JAVIER CASTRILLI

Another duel that was marked in the history of the classic took place in the semifinals of the 1998 Paulista Championship. The alvinegro team was led by Gamarra, Rincón, Vampeta and Marcelinho Carioca, while the red-green team had César, Augusto, Evair and Ailton.

As they had the better campaign, Corinthians played to two equal results and the first game ended in a 1-1 draw at Morumbi.

In the decisive match, also played at Cícero Pompeu de Toledo, Lusa took the lead through Ailton. In the second half, Argentine referee Javier Castrilli gave Evair a penalty to Cris, and the Lusa players were furious. Marcelinho Carioca converted and equalised, but Da Silva put Lusa back in front.

However, in the 44th minute of the final tournament, the Argentinian scored another controversial penalty for Timão. The mood lifted and four players, three from Portuguesa, were sent off. Rincón scored the goal that took Alvinegro to the final, but Vanderlei Luxemburgo’s side were defeated by São Paulo in the decider.
