The Tel Aviv square will broadcast live the return of the kidnapped
The Israeli government said the release of 20 live hostages held by the Islamic fundamentalist group Hamas should begin in the early hours of Monday (13), close to the expiration of the three-day deadline set by US President Donald Trump’s peace plan.
According to a spokesman for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s cabinet, the abductees should be released at the same time and handed over to the Red Cross. They will then be taken across the border and transported to the Re’im military base in southern Israel.
The expectation is that this will happen without ceremonies of public display of the hostages by Hamas, unlike earlier in the year, when kidnapped Israelis were placed on stages in front of crowds before their return.
Hostage Square in Tel Aviv will be open to the public in the early hours of the morning and will broadcast the liberation live. Another 28 abductees were killed in captivity in Gaza, but the deadline for returning the bodies to their families is still uncertain, as not all have yet been located.
Meanwhile, Trump will leave for the Middle East this Sunday (12th) and plans to visit the released people, if their health conditions allow. He will then travel to Egypt to participate in the official signing ceremony of the ceasefire agreement, in force since last Friday (10).
Several international leaders will participate in the event, but not Hamas. In exchange for the release of the hostages, Israel will free 1,950 Palestinian prisoners, including 250 sentenced to life imprisonment, but negotiations on the list of beneficiaries are still ongoing.
The Islamist group insists on the inclusion of Marwan Barghouti, the most popular figure in the occupied territories and nicknamed the “Palestinian Mandela”, but Israel has denied the request.
Issues relating to the disarmament of Hamas and the management of the Gaza Strip will be addressed in the next rounds of negotiations. In the truce earlier this year there was no progress on these issues and the conflict was resumed by Israel.
