In an exclusive interview for FOTOGRAMAS, the actress reveals the incompatibility of seeing a film like this on platforms.
James Cameron was in the news again last year with the premiere of ‘Avatar: The Sense of Water’, the return of cinema in capital letters. And it is that if someone can compete with James Cameron for sneaking into the highest grossing films in history, it is… himself.
As you know, ‘Titanic’ returns to movie theaters for its 25th anniversary in a remastered version and only in 3D and special formats. To celebrate this fact, PHOTOGRAMS has had the opportunity to have Kate Winslet in an exclusive interview. Kate Winslet acknowledges that she has spent half her life talking about whether or not Leonardo DiCaprio fit on the ‘Titanic’ table, a time in which the protagonist of this film milestone has become one of the great actresses of her generation who is not no role resists him (we can’t wait to see ‘Trust’, the new project he is preparing for HBO Max after the wonderful ‘Mare of Easttown’, one of the best HBO Max series).
A quarter of a century later, the popularity of ‘Titanic’ remains undiminished, and Winslet knows the answer: “The reason ‘Titanic’ has endured is because the experience for so many people of watching the movie is tied to a part of their lives. .(…) For many people I know it was on their first date, people who have since married and had children.”.
There is something powerful in that look at the past, at a time completely different from the current one: “When you go back to that 1998, there were no cell phones, there were no emails. We had a clarity of thought that we no longer have. We don’t have as much time as before to sit down and read a book, or have a conversation without thinking that you have to look at your mobile. (…) It represents something in their lives instead of just the story and the romance and the music and the costumes and all that wonderful stuff. It talks about another moment in their lives,” says the British.
We don’t need reasons to be able to enjoy Cameron’s masterpiece again in movie theaters, but Kate Winslet argues why we should see it on the big screen: “I think people should go see it in theaters because there is nothing like the sound, especially now. Technology has advanced and has transformed movie theaters. (…) Now there are speakers everywhere, you can literally feel the sound under your seat, it surrounds you, it’s everywhere, it’s in your ears and in your chest”. A sensation that, as he admits, is impossible to experience from the sofa in our homes: “You can’t have that experience on an iPad or on Netflix. Is not the same. (…) those special effects They were very innovative at the time and I’m sure they have remastered since the movie was made, so it will be spectacular,” settles the Oscar winner for ‘The Reader’.
Oh, and if you continue with the question after reading this, 25 years later we give you the solution to the dilemma surrounding the character of Leonardo DicaprioCan you guess: Jack couldn’t survive on ‘Titanic’. Case closed.
