Odair comments on Santos’ set-piece problems: ‘We have short players’

The coach said the team was doing well until he conceded a corner kick

Coach Odair Hellmann held a press conference following Santos’ 3-1 defeat by São Paulo at Morumbi. The coach said that the match had very particular situations, citing the sending offs and goals conceded from set pieces, one of the team’s most visible problems this season. For him, Santos was doing well in the match until he conceded Calleri’s goal in the 16th minute of the first half.

– In my opinion, the start of the match was normal, Santos played well and we conceded two goals from set pieces very quickly. The first, and the second from a corner, still a first stick situation. And then, when we have the expelled players, we don’t evaluate the game anymore, not even with the rain and the conditions of the field.

Always on dead ball, Odair points out the cause of so many difficulties for the team. According to the manager, there is a problem with the characteristics of the players, due to their height or physical imposition:

– We are trying to train, but we are having difficulty with the characteristics. Our midfielders are short, our wingers are also not that tall and have no imposing characteristics. Set piece is duel, imposition, regardless of zone (score in) or individual. We have many players with this difficulty.

The coach also specified that the solution is not as simple as it seems, given that it would be impracticable to make three or four team changes thinking only of improving aerial duels.

– I think we have to create and train so that, with the players who are on the pitch, we have greater imposition and we can stop this situation which was decisive in the two classics – he concluded.

Currently, Santos have nine points in eight games played and occupy the last indigestible in Group A. Peixe will be back on the field next Thursday (16), at 19:30, against Santo André, away from home, for Paulistão.
