Available today on Disney +, in the absence of movie theaters, the movie Red Alert depicts the procrastination of Meilin, a 13-year-old teenager, at a stupid age! And we love it!
Რ About?
The Adventures of Maileen Lee, a 13-year-old teenager, full of self-confidence but torn between her image as a model little girl, her overly protective mother’s eyes, and the chaos of adolescence. And as if all the changes in him are not enough, every time he is overwhelmed with emotions – which almost always happens to a teenager – he transforms into a giant red panda!
Red Alert, written and directed by Domee, features original soundtracks by Rosalie Chiang, Sandra Oh, Wai Ching Ho, Ava Morse… Disney +.
Contemporary work
Welcome to the world of Red Alert, where Maylin, a 13-year-old teenager of Sino-Canadian descent, finds herself well, despite turning into a (beloved) giant red panda as soon as she gets very excited. An inappropriate metaphor, but so well-seen talk about the “disgusting” changes that young girls face at the onset of puberty. Discovering her condition, Maileen has to move between all her prerogatives as a teenager, with an absolute priority: attending her favorite boy band, 4 * city concert.
The great talent of animated films lies in this promise: to offer whimsical and fantastic stories that go far beyond live action films. But it is clear that Red Alert is moving to the next level with its brutally non-conformist nature.
Personal film
Pixar movies are all known for their unique style and the originality of their stories, but it sounds different because we feel that Domee Shi, the director, turned Red Alert into a very personal movie, full of personality and energy. Like Maylin, Domi is a Chinese-Canadian who grew up in Toronto and “passed” the cultural influences of the early 2000s.
Making an almost autobiographical film, she signs a work of universal significance with this story about her transition to adulthood, talking about puberty and what it means to be a woman. As a bonus, by telling a story about a little girl of Asian descent, he opens up a field still little explored by Pixar and adds a stone to a building of different cultures, allowing each child to identify with Meilin.
Ნostalgia
Domi Shi also fully plays the card of nostalgia, choosing to create his own story during his own adolescence. Collective hysteria surrounding groups of boys who monopolized radio and music channels in their early 21s.E A century may already seem like a distant past. And yet, he echoes the same enthusiasm, nowadays, around K-pop groups. For this occasion, Pixar called on Billy Elish to write three songs in the purest style of the boys of that time, and the result was very successful.
Nostalgia also exists in how Dom portrays adolescence and the unwavering friendship that connects Maileen with a small group of her friends. This leads to a lot of funny scenes where the stupid age is no longer a source of irritation (seen by teenagers), but rather an almost golden age where bursts of laughter erupt and where solidarity is a fundamental value.
In her future adult adventure, Miley sometimes disobeys her parent’s orders, but it all ends – not to mention – in a reasonable way, as well as with the realization of the need for emancipation from the teen’s parents.
Surprise exists in Red Alert, on many levels, and if we can be a little concerned about this change in tone, we come out energetic and full of energy. In a different style, Red Alert corresponds to Vice Versa or Soul, thus bringing the viewer closer to a universal theme through a prism far, far away from conventions. We did not ask for more.
