The investigation accompanied by Rodolfo Reyes shows that the writer received a powerful toxin that can cause paralysis of the nervous system and death
AP – Forensic specialists have established that the Chilean poet Paul Neruda (1904-1973) died of poisoning nearly 50 years ago, said a family member of the winner. Nobel prize monday 13.
the revelation of Rodolfo Reyes, nephew of Neruda, is the latest twist in one of the great debates in post-coup Chile. The long-held official position is that Neruda died of complications from prostate cancer, but the poet’s chauffeur has maintained for decades that he was poisoned.
There was no corroboration of Reyes’ comments from forensic experts at the Canada, Denmark AND Chilewhich are expected to publicly release a report Wednesday on the cause of Neruda’s death.
The public release of the group’s discovery has been delayed twice this year, first due to internet connectivity issues for one of the experts and then again because a judge said the group hadn’t yet reached a consensus.
Several years ago, international forensic experts they dismissed the official cause of death as cachexia, or weakness and wasting of the body due to a chronic disease, in this case cancer. But at the time they said they did not determine what killed Neruda.
In an interview with the Associated Press, Reyes said forensic testing in Danish and Canadian laboratories indicated the presence of “a large amount of Chloristridium botulinum, which is incompatible with human life.” The potent toxin can cause nervous system paralysis and death.
Reyes first disclosed the information to Spanish news agency EFE on Monday.
As attorney in the court case for his uncle’s death, Reyes said he had access to the forensic report, which was made after the same panel said in 2017 that there were indications of a toxin on the bones of the late poet and on a molar.
Lab tests concluded the toxin was administered while the poet was alive, Reyes said.
The report is due to be released nearly 50 years after the poet and Communist Party member’s death and 12 years after a judicial investigation into the possible poisoning began, according to his driver. Manuel Aray.
Araya told the AP earlier this month that he was confident the forensic findings would support his claim that the poet died after receiving “an injection in the stomachat the clinic where he was admitted. Araya said she first heard this version of events from a nurse.
Neruda, who was 69 and suffering from prostate cancer, died in the chaos that followed the September 11, 1973 coup in Chile that ousted the president. Salvador Allende and put the general Augusto Pinochet in power.
Neruda’s body was exhumed in 2013 to determine the cause of his death, but those tests showed no toxic agents or poisons in his bones. His family and the driver have requested further investigation.
In 2015, the Chilean government said it was “very likely that a third party” was responsible for Neruda’s death. OR poet he was buried in his favorite home overlooking the Pacific coast last year.
In 2017, a team of international scientists determined that Neruda is not dead cancer or malnutrition, rejecting the official cause of death but not saying what he died of.
“The key conclusions are the invalidity of the death certificate when it comes to cachexia as a cause of death,” said Aurelio Luna, one of the experts on the panel at the time. “We cannot yet rule out or state the natural or violent cause of death by Paul Neruda.”
Neruda, best known for his love poems, was a friend of Allende, who preferred to kill himself rather than surrender to the troops during the coup led by Pinochet.
Neruda was traumatized by the military coup and the persecution and murder of his friends. He planned to go into exile, where he would be an influential voice against the dictatorship.
But the day before his scheduled departure, it was taken from him ambulance at a clinic in Chile’s capital, Santiago, where he was being treated for cancer and other ailments. Neruda officially died there on September 23, 1973, of natural causes.
But suspicions that dictatorship had played a role in the deaths lingered long after Chile returned to democracy in 1990.
Former Mexican ambassador to Chile at the time of the military coup, Gonzalo Martinez Corbala, told the AP on two occasions that he saw Neruda the day before his death and that his body weight was close to 100 kilograms. Martínez spoke to the AP by phone in 2017, just days before his death.
araya he told the AP last month that he still thinks if Neruda “wasn’t left alone in the clinic, they wouldn’t have killed him.”
He recalled that, by order of Neruda, on Sunday 23 September, the poet’s wife, Matilde Urruzia, and was at the villa to collect the luggage that was to be taken to Mexico the next day. In mid-afternoon Neruda asked them to come back early. He died that same night.
During his lifetime, Neruda has amassed dozens of awards, including the 1971 Nobel Prize for Literaturebut in recent years there has been criticism from feminist groups about a rape he committed in the 1930s and which he recounted in his book I confess that I have lived. He is also criticized for having abandoned his only daughter, Malva Marina, because she was born with hydrocephalus.
