“Chromosome 21”: it’s the actors with Down syndrome who star in the Netflix series

There are actors with the same disability as his character, such as the protagonists of ‘Chromosome 21’, who stand out in the Netflix series.

This suspenseful series follows the story of Tomy (Sebastián Solorza), a young man with Down syndrome who finds himself next to a crime scene, for which an investigation begins to determine whether he is a suspect or a witness.

It’s Sebastián Solorza, Tomy in “Chromosome 21”

The star of this new Netflix series is Sebastián Solorza, an actor with Down syndrome who is 40 years old (while his character is 26).

In an interview with “The Clinic” on September 22, 2022, Solorza revealed several details about himself and the artistic career that led him to the first Chilean series starring actors with this genetic condition.

For 10 years he has been a member of the Bendito Teatro company, which consists mainly of people with Down syndrome.

He has acted in more than ten plays and Tommy from ‘Chromosome 21’ is his first TV role. It was a big challenge for him, and according to what he says, the hardest part was the recordings:

“I didn’t know what it was going to be like and when I was recording I knew what it was like on TV. It was hard for me to concentrate and learn my texts, but I was with my classmates […] everyone helped me and I learned a lot from them.”

Sebastián’s mother, Jenna, explained to “The Clinic” that despite the fact that Sebastián never learned to read, “he has the demand and discipline of any other actor.”

His relatives recorded his texts and after listening to them he understood them and “was clearer about the intentions behind his character’s words and actions”.

When Sebastián was asked how he feels when he acts, he confirmed that he feels happy and proud. In addition, he emphasized his main support that he had to fulfill his dreams: “If I am an actor today, it is thanks to my family.”

It’s Pía Urrutia, Cristina in “Chromosome 21”

In “Chromosome 21” there is another actress with Down syndrome who stands out among the cast: Pía Urrutia, who plays Cristina Pérez Lombardi.

His character is a young high society woman with whom Tommy is in love and plans to marry despite the fact that their families oppose their romance.

Pía is 29 years old and in addition to being an actress, she also participates in a modern dance group. As if that wasn’t enough, she works as an administrative assistant in a private clinic in Santiago, Chile.

Unlike Sebastián Solorza, Pía Urrutia learned his lines. Like her actress, she enjoys acting to the fullest: “We have Down syndrome and we are capable of it,” said the actress in an interview with “Euronews”.

As if that wasn’t enough, Sebastián’s mother revealed to “The Clinic” that off-screen there was a real romance between the two actors (as well as other celebrities who are friends with their ex-partners). Since their relationship was in the past, they had to be professional in front of the cameras:

“The two of them (Pía and Sebastián) were friends and had already ended the relationship when they met again in the series, where they also have to be a couple. They had to, as he rightly says, be professional and keep things under control, very calm and put their whole story aside.”

“Chromosome 21” is made up of other Chilean actors such as Gastón Salgado, Valentina Muhr, Mario Horton and Claudia Di Girolamo.
