Jennifer Lawrence didn’t bathe to get the role that launched her to fame: the story

Jennifer Lawrence is one of those actresses who were told they had to lose weight to make it, but even so she didn’t give up on her path to becoming a major Hollywood celebrity.

In 2010, she starred in Winter’s Bone, a film that earned her her first Best Actress Oscar nomination. But before he was accepted into the film, Lawrence had to resort to extreme measures to stay with Ree Dolly’s character.

Jennifer Lawrence Was Rejected for ‘Winter’s Bone’

“Winter’s Bone” tells the story of Ree Dolly, a 17-year-old girl who has been left in charge of her family, which lives in an unsafe area in the mountains of Missouri.

Her two younger brothers and sick mother are in her care, so she sets out to find her father (who has just been released from prison) before the authorities take their home.

He is a complex character and Jennifer Lawrence fell completely in love with him. This was revealed in an interview with the Guardian in 2010:

“I thought it was the best female role I’d ever read. I was really impressed by Ree’s tenacity and how she wouldn’t take no for an answer.”

However, the first time he auditioned for the role, the star of “The Hunger Games: Catching Fire” (which you can watch on ViX+, ViX’s premium streaming service), was rejected.

In a 2015 interview with NPR, the actress revealed that when she auditioned for “Winter’s Bone” in Los Angeles, the film’s producers didn’t consider her for the role because they thought she was “too pretty.”

But Lawrence did not give up and after learning that the casting had moved to New York, she did not hesitate to fly there and try again. Here’s how he explained it to an actor roundtable for The Hollywood Reporter in 2022:

“When Winter’s Bone turned me down, they were casting in LA, I went and they said, ‘No thanks.’ And then they opened the casting in New York, and I flew to New York and came back like I was a foreigner.”

Jennifer Lawrence Didn’t Bathe to Win ‘Winter’s Bone’ Role

Since the producers of “Winter’s Bone” didn’t consider Jennifer Lawrence because she was “too beautiful” (like other actresses who were rejected for the same reason), she wanted to prove them wrong. In an interview with NPR, she admitted that she didn’t shower to look messy, and her efforts paid off:

“Well…I got rejected and then they moved the casting to New York, and I got a red eye at the audition the next day in New York. So that always helps. Red eyes. No shower. Without makeup. Finally they said, ‘Oh, she’s right. She’s not pretty!'”

The actress said she would do anything to win the role, including “walking on hot coals” to get it, she told the Guardian.
