Vítor Pereira’s team trail behind Volta Redonda in the standings but manage to seek a positive result at State
Flamengo is back at the top of the table Brazilian championship. In a match that gave the impression that the team would be another Rio big to stumble around and around – he had already beaten Vasco and Fluminense -, the inspiration of the gunner Gabigol proved to be decisive for the breakthrough, for 3 to 1, at Raulino Oliveira. Before guaranteeing the crowd’s celebration, however, the number 10 wasted a penalty to make it 1-0 for the hosts.
Gabigol’s two goals placed him among the top 10 goalscorers in Flamengo’s history. He has scored 142 goals for the club and shares 10th place with Índio. In the current State edition, he now has five, as does Pedro, who finished the scoring in extra time. Tired, the number 10 was replaced before the end and left the field applauded by the audience, who sang his name in chorus. He reciprocated with applause.
Flamengo travels to Ecuador where they will face Independiente del Valle on Sunday in the first leg of the Recopa Sul-Americana. First, he returns to Raulino de Oliveira on Saturday to face Resende, again for Carioca.
142 times we raised the sign!
Once again Gabi makes history for Flamengo: today, against Volta Redonda, he equalized with Índio for the tenth best scorer in our history.

After losing first place to Botafogo and second place to Fluminense around the time they went to play for the Club World Cup, Flamengo entered the pitch under pressure in Morocco to overcome dangerous Volta Redonda to return to part top of the table. They needed not only to maintain their unbeaten record but also to add up the three-pointers to overtake their rivals, both with 16 points. Red-black added 14.
Facing an opponent who had beaten Vasco and Fluminense and well armed by Rogério Corrêa, playing on the sidelines was the advice to overcome the well-placed defence. But Flamengo started in pain, perhaps missing Everton Ribeiro’s refined pass on the bench. Vidal won the occasion. Before the technical interruption for rehydration, the only dangerous move was a kick by Arrascaeta on the crossbar after a bad cut by the defender. The move cost a major scolding from the team’s coach Volta Redonda.
Vítor Pereira’s conversation with the team was futile and Flamengo continued to be apathetic and rarely reached Raulino Oliveira. Gabigol struck over the top in a rare opportunity. He wasn’t efficient in front and ended up being punished in the back.
A counter-attack already in the stoppage time of the first half ended in a goal for the hosts. Stolen in the middle, the ball reaches the scorer Lelê, who was not greedy and serves Luizinho. The attacker hit a cross, indefensible for Santos.
Before the triple whistle there was still time for a big controversy. The match was already in the final seconds when the assistant called the referee to “hand over” Dudu’s push on Gabigol. Rigor and many complaints. The #10 went for the pace and Vinícius Dias made the defense. The final whistle came with many insults from the Flamengo fans to coach Vítor Pereira. The outrage was with Everton Ribeiro’s withdrawal from the starting lineup.
The midfielder came on after the break. Not by choice, but by the pain Gerson felt. With more quality, the idea was to react quickly. However, it was Luizinho who almost extended after receiving back from Lelê. Ball into the net from outside. Alix Vinícius had yet another chance to score the second.
Vítor Pereira was preparing three exchanges at the same time when Gabigol received a free kick and equalised. A little later, the gunner almost widened. Stopped in the miracle of the goalkeeper. Impatient at first, the Rossoneri crowd started playing with the team. The exchanges take place and Flamengo is very offensive, with two midfielders and three forwards, exposed, but looking for the advantage.
The match was open, with chances from both sides. Pedro had a good opportunity, but in the end it took him a while and then stopped. Even Volta Redonda was not accurate when he created and saw the hero of the night reappear. He ball for Gabigol in the area which turns into a strong kick. The match went on until the 51st minute, Volta Redonda didn’t have the strength to react and even conceded a third, from Pedro, in stoppage time, to a huge Rossoneri party.
