Universal is preparing a live action movie of ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ that will be directed by Dean DeBlois, responsible for the animated trilogy.
Hiccup and Toothless fans are in luck, ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ will have a live-action film based on the DreamWorks animated trilogy.
Dean DeBlois, responsible for the originals, will debut as a director in live action cinema with this production with which Universal intends to emulate the Disney Live Action formula.
With Cressida Cowell’s books as the main baseDeBlois created with Will Davies and his co-director, Chris Sanders, a wonderful “coming-of-age” about the friendship between two forced enemies: a young Viking named Hiccup and a toothless dragon.
The union between both characters, and the beautiful artistic designs, made ‘How to Train Your Dragon’ (Dean DeBlois, Chris Sanders, 2010) a success which is part of our list of recommendations with the best Netflix movies to watch as a family and, for those who no longer have the big N, it is also among the best movies to watch as a family on Prime Video.
The tandem formed by DeBlois and Sanders came from sweeping the competition with ‘Lilo & Stitch’ (2002), one of the best animated Disney films, and the success of this new high-flying adventure confirmed their talent and strengthened a saga that soon had its own collection of shorts grouped into ‘How to Train Your Dragon: Legends’ (Tom Owens, 2010) and the Cartoon Network series ‘Dragons: The Riders of Mama’, winner of 4 Annie Awards, and ‘Dragons: Defenders of Berk’.
DeBlois continued the franchise alone with the great sequel ‘How to Train Your Dragon 2’ (2014)which was followed by the television special ‘Dragons: Dawn of the Dragon Runners’ (Elaine Bogan, John Sanford, 2014) and the fun ‘Dragons: Toward New Confines’, available on the Netflix series catalogue.
This new series brought us closer to end of the animated saga in theaters, ‘How to train your dragon 3’ (2019)which obviously was accompanied by different titles on the small screen, among which the series ‘Dragons: The Nine Realms’ stands out.
Now, with Universal determined to cash in on the franchise, Dean DeBlois makes his directing debut in live action with the help of Marc Platt in production, nominated for best film for ‘Star City (La La Land)’ (Damien Chazelle, 2016), ‘Bridge of Spies’ (Steven Spielberg, 2015) and ‘The Trial of the Chicago 7’ ( Aaron Sorkin, 2020). Platt is currently in production on Universal’s film adaptation of ‘Wicked,’ directed by Jon M. Chu and starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo.
