Queen Charlotte from “Bridgerton” existed in real life
According to “Brigerton” showrunner Chris Van Dusen, in an interview with Collider, he worked closely with historians to create the Netflix series.
That’s how he discovered that Charlotte was England’s first mixed-race queen. From this information was born the idea of creating a multiracial period story.
According to a genealogical record obtained by the BBC, Sophia Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (1744-1818), better known as Queen Charlotte, “was a direct descendant of an African woman”.
However, for years his racial origins remained an enigma, since in fifteenth-century Flemish paintings artists usually did not differentiate between royal people’s skin tone.
But according to researcher Joseph Johnson in his book “African Impact: Historical Cross Reference”, in Queen Charlotte’s paintings of the time her African features and characteristics stand out.
The love story of Queen Charlotte and King George III
“Queen Charlotte,” a period series (like others whose costumes will make you travel back in time), is a “spin-off” of “Brigerton” and will specifically focus on telling the love life of the queen against during her youth.
It is possible that the series will adapt in its own way some of the events surrounding the life of Queen Charlotte and her husband, King George III.
According to the royal family’s website, Princess Charlotte was born in a small duchy in northern Germany in the Holy Roman Empire.
In 1760, King George III of Great Britain ascended the throne, but he was 22 years old and unmarried. Princess Charlotte was automatically positioned as the ideal choice to become his wife.
They met on the same day as their wedding, as the wedding ceremony took place 6 hours after the princess arrived in Britain. His coronation took place a few months later.
In less than a year they had their first child, the Prince of Wales, who would become King George IV. In total they had 15 offspring and were responsible for the acquisition of Buckingham Palace.
However, in 1765 the King began to develop a mental illness, so the Prince of Wales became Regent and Queen Charlotte remained her husband’s guardian until the time of his death.
Aspects of this illness of King George III have already been described in previous seasons of ‘Bridgerton’. But since “Queen Charlotte” will focus on the queen’s youth, it’s possible that her love story will be more in-depth than her travails.
