This Friday, forward Christian Atsu, a former Chelsea and Porto player, was found dead in the rubble of the building where he lived in Turkey. The player was one of the victims of the earthquake that also hit Syria.
In his social networks, Danilo, from Juventus, paid homage to the Ghanaian, with whom he played in the Portuguese team. The Brazilian recalled a curious story that happened during their time together in Portugal.
“I well remember our lunches or dinners with Port at the Sol Verde hotel, in Espinho, Portugal, where we always ate the whole chicken and also the bone. Exactly. The bone. We, in our superficiality, always laughed and said, ‘How hungry is this Atsu?!’ began the 31-year-old player.
“‘Until one day, even without need, and always taking everything lightly and with that broad smile, he explained to us that he used to eat even the bone, because as a child he had learned not to waste anything that had to be eaten, because I didn’t know when and what the next meal would be,” he added.
Finally, the Brazilian also stressed how difficult it is to deal with his friend’s untimely death and took the opportunity to say that he will tell his children about Atsu.
“Damn… what a blow to the stomach, if the pun is worth it. Between ourselves, those last few days at Porto where you asked me for a shirt I remember saying: ‘When I am a father, I will tell my children that a day I played with Danilo’ Now I say, you were an inspiration even without knowing it. I will tell my children that I played and met such a human being like you,” he concluded.
In the early hours of 6 February, a 7.8 magnitude earthquake devastated Turkey and Syria and left more than 40,000 dead, including Eyüp Türkaslan, goalkeeper of Turkish second division club Malatyaspor. He was 28 years old
