The end of the fifth episode of ‘The Last of Us’ was a carousel of emotions. From relief at the thought that Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsay) had escaped from Kansas City along with Henry and Sam, we turned to anguish when looters appeared and a horde of infected led by a fan, the new evolution of clickers. .
From there we go back to the joy of discovering that “The enemies of my enemies are my freinds” (let’s see, I don’t think this phrase was like that, but it works for me), and the infected killed Kathleen (Melanie Lynskey) and Perry, leaving the way clear for our friends to escape. But In the universe of ‘The Last of Us’ there are no happy endings…
As it happens in all the best zombie series, the character we had grown most fond of is bitten by an infected person. An infected, yes, because the word “zombie” is prohibited in ‘The Last of Us’. Sam shows the bite to Ellie, who tries unsuccessfully to help him. Eventually the cordyceps fungus takes over Sam’s mind and he turns, attacking Ellie. Henry goes into shock for a few moments, but ends up killing his little brother. He then can’t take the pain of what he just did and commits suicide.
Even though Ellie is tremendously mature for her age, the trauma pack is overflowing and can’t help but break. We’ll see if Joel is more understanding in a parent-child relationship with the young woman who is becoming more and more affectionate.
What is certain is Tommy’s return. Joel will finally meet his brother, who has disappeared since the first episode, in a new community in Wyoming full of new characters. We’ll see how long they last alive, because at the rate of deaths that the series goes…
