What is it about? New adventures await Scott Lang and Hope Van Dyne in their lives as a couple and as superheroes! All is well: Scott has written a best-selling book, and Hope is devoted to humanitarian causes. Their family – Janet Van Dyne and Hank Pym (Hop’s parents) and Cassie, Scott’s daughter – are finally part of their everyday lives.
Cassie shares her new family’s passion for science and technology, especially when it comes to the quantum realm. But his curiosity leads them all on an unexpected odyssey into the vast subatomic world, a mysterious place where they encounter strange new creatures, a society in crisis, and a ruthless time master whose shadow of danger is only just beginning to expand.
Scott and Cassie are suddenly pulled in one direction, and Hope, Janet, and Hank find themselves in another. All are lost in a world at war, unsure of how they can escape it or even find their way home one day…
Founding members of the Avengers
In the original 1960s comics, Hank and Janet (played by Michael Douglas and Michelle Pfeiffer) are founding members of the Avengers. The latter names them as such. If the MCU was taking a different direction with its characters, Peyton Reed wanted to honor their importance, “As in the Marvel Universe, but also as an effective duo of superheroes who share the same scientific curiosity.”
A new phase of the MCU
Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania kicks off the 5th phase of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, titled The Multiverse Saga, which will immerse us in the quantum realm and deepen the theme of the multiverse.
Introducing this new phase was quite a challenge for Peyton Reed: “Creating the Quantum Realm is the final act of world creation. This time, our heroes go much deeper into the subatomic world than before. We not only had to create the appearance of these cities and civilizations, but also their inner workings and their history, and then populate them with all kinds of creatures, with beings and structures”.
Producer Stephen Broussard compares this new Ant-Man adventure to Captain America: The Winter Soldier, “Where we witnessed the fall of SHIELD with the feeling that the entire MCU revolved around it” and Captain America: Civil War, “With its divided characters drawing battle lines and making the future of the MCU feel like it was defined by the action of the movie. What we wanted to do with this new Ant-Man is make the movie as important and essential as it is to the future. MCU- S”.
A family epic
Director Peyton Reed says: “The Ant-Man saga has always been about family. In this film, we’re deepening and complicating the family dynamics, but by placing them on a whole new scale. In the first two films, we touched on the subatomic world, but this time we wanted to bring a completely different style to the film to give it an epic feel.” .
The film focuses in particular on the relationship between Scott and his now 18-year-old daughter Cassie: “Scott has a bit of a hard time with Cassie because he thinks of her as a child when he’s grown into an idealistic young man with his own ideas of how to live his life. It all creates a very dramatic and comedic tension. Powerful. .” Family secrets are also at the heart of the story, with Janet’s character giving up on what she’s been living in the subatomic world for 30 years.
Kang the Conqueror
The film debuts a new villain named the new Thanos: Kang, played by Jonathan Majors and revealed in Loki’s season 1 finale as “The One Who Remains”. What makes him particularly dangerous is that there are many versions of the villain, each more terrifying than the other. The one Scott will have to face in Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania is an even more dangerous option than Loki.
Peyton Reed comments: “While keeping the family history close, we really wanted to think big. To do that, we needed a villain with an international reputation. I grew up reading comic books, and I’ve always loved Kang the Conqueror, one of the great antagonists of the series. Comics.”
For the director, Kang’s translator brought a different energy to the set, where the atmosphere had previously been calm and cheerful: “Jonathan Majors emerged as a disruptive element, a very intimidating force. He would bring music to the set and we all knew Kang the Conqueror was there. It was great to have that energy juxtaposed against Paul. Rudy as a reflection. The film itself. Many might consider Ant- Man is the weakest of the Avengers. But pitting this guy against Kang the Conqueror, the most powerful being in the multiverse, seemed like an exciting idea to us, frankly.”
Three actresses, one character
Kathryn Newton portrays Cassie Lang, Scott’s daughter. The actress replaced Abby Ryder Fortson and Emma Fuhrman, who portrayed the character at two different ages, the first in Ant-Man and the second in Ant-Man and the Wasp.
Seen in TV series The Society and Big Little Lies and in the cinema Pokemon Detective Pikachu and Freaky, Newton had to hide information when he joined the MCU: “Some secrets are funnier when you know them alone. When the official announcement was made, I was sitting on my bed with my dogs and it was my birthday. As soon as the news broke, I was inundated with messages. Never. I’ve gotten so many on my birthday before.”
