“It’s become impossible”: Judi Dench confides in this evil that prevents her from playing

As reported by People and Variety, in a new interview on the set of The Graham Norton Show, Judi Dench said that it’s very difficult for her to learn lines of dialogue now that she’s losing her sight.

This has become impossible, and since I recently discovered I have a photographic memory, I need to find a machine that not only teaches me the phrase, but tells me it’s at the top of page 17 or something! Learning the lines and memorizing them was very easy. I could do all of Twelfth Night right now!

But this does not prevent it from rotating

Speaking to the Vision Foundation, a London-based charity for the visually impaired, in 2021, Judi Dench also revealed that she asks close friends to help her memorize her new scripts by reading them out loud, as repeating the dialogue helps.

“You will find a way to deal with and overcome what is very difficult for you“, he said then. “I had to find another way to learn lines and things, which was to have my good friends repeat them to me over and over again. So I have to learn by repeating and I can only hope that people don’t notice too much if every line is completely hopeless!“

Judi Dench remained in good spirits, however, even sharing with us how her loss of sight contributed to funny moments, especially on stage: “I was doing The Winter’s Tale Kenneth Branagh A few years ago I was playing Paulina, and after we had been playing for about three weeks at the Garrick, she said to me—I have a long speech at the end—she said, “Judy, if you gave that speech to about eight feet. But that doesn’t seem to be stopping the actor, who earned an Oscar nomination last year for his supporting role in Kenneth Branagh’s Belfast. She recently made a guest appearance in the Christmas musical Spirited with Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds and starred in Richard Eyre’s 2022 drama Allelujah, based on Alan Bennett’s play of the same name.
