The Serbian remains number 1 in the world even without entering the field in the last week
the Serbian Novak Djokovic accomplished another historic feat in his victorious career in the tennison this Monday. By remaining ranked No. 1 in the world, he equaled the record of Steffi Graff of 377 weeks at the top of the chart. The former German tennis player has been the sole owner of this brand since the late 1990s.
It is certain that Djokovic will break the record and isolate himself as the tennis player who has remained at the top of the rankings longest, between men and women. The Serbian cannot be surpassed by the Spanish Carlos Alcaraz, current number two in the world, in next Monday’s update. So, he’ll hit the 378 weeks mark at the tip.
Graf is one of the legends of women’s tennis, considered by many to be the best in history. The German shone on all surfaces between 1980 and 1990. She reached the top for the first time in 1987 and, in 1997, she was ranked number 1 in the world for the last time. She retired from the court in 1999.
Djokovic was already the record holder among men since he passed the 310 weeks mark, which belonged to Roger Federer – the Swiss still leads among consecutive weeks at the top, with 237. Among active tennis players, the closest to Serbian is the Spaniard Rafael Nadal, with 209 weeks of advantage.
Djokovic’s brand isn’t threatened in the short term, but his reign at the top could be ended by another Spanish tennis player. Alcaraz, the main star of this week’s Rio Open, ended 2022 as world No. 1 and has already warned that he intends to reclaim the position in the coming weeks. At the moment only 590 points separate the two tennis players.
This week’s Top 10 sees the return of Daniil Medvedev, champion in Rotterdam over the weekend. The Russian climbed three positions and is now eighth. Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Denmark’s Holger Rune each lost one position. And Pole Hubert Hurkacz left the Top 10.
The Brazilian Thiago Monteiro has lost five places and is now in 83rd place. Felipe Meligeni gained one position (163rd) and Matheus Pucinelli De Almeida lost four positions (220th).
FEMALE
Only an exchange of positions moved the female Top 10, led by the Polish Iga Swiatek. Runner-up at the Doha Tournament, Qatar, American Jessica Pegula moved up one spot to third place, beating Tunisian Ons Jabeur into fourth. The Brazilian Beatriz Haddad Maia maintained the 12th position, on the edge of the Top 10.
