In ‘The Whale’ Brendan Fraser looks unrecognizable as a 600kg man. For his outstanding work in the film, the actor is among the nominees for the 2023 Oscars.
This film follows the story of Charlie, a man who, after the death of a loved one, sinks into a deep depression that causes him to become severely obese.
As he deals with his illness, he seeks to reconnect with his teenage daughter, who he abandoned when she was just a child.

The ending of “The Whale” explained: what happened to Charlie?
The ending of ‘The Whale’ ties directly into various points that the film hinted at throughout its plot.
First, it is revealed that the “Moby-Dick” essay that Charlie is obsessed with was written by his daughter Ellie (Sandy Sink). This means that even though he had no contact with her for years, he always had her in his thoughts.
On the other hand, the last scene of “The Whale” occupies an earlier moment between Charlie and Ellie. On the day they met again, the young woman challenged him to get up and walk towards her, which he failed to do.
In the finale of “The Whale”, after settling his outstanding issues with important persons in his life, such as his girlfriend Liz or his ex-wife Mary, Charlie confronts his daughter for the last time.
And he doesn’t anyway, because he makes Ellie read her “Moby-Dick” essay at the same time he gets up from his seat and walks over to her.
This appears to be a metaphor from ‘Moby-Dick’, where Charlie is the whale and Ellie is Ahab, who wants the animal dead.
But because she won’t stop crying, she actually shows that she wants to reconnect with her father, even though she realizes it’s too late to do so.
The ending of “The Whale” doesn’t reveal whether Charlie makes it to Ellie or not, because halfway through it her figure lights up and rises into the air. Later, a younger version of him is seen enjoying a day at the beach with his daughter. In this sense, it is a representation of his death and his arrival in heaven.
