The president of Pixar tries to justify the resounding failure of ‘Lightyear’

“We ask too much of the viewer,” Peter Docter has stated as a possible reason for the poor acceptance of the spin-off of ‘Toy Story’.

The spin-off of ‘Toy Story’ centered on Buzz Lightyear surprised as a science fiction film and space adventures in a tone that had little or nothing to do with the adventures with Woody, Mr. Potato and company. Not surprisingly, this movie didn’t star Tim Allen’s voice doll, but rather was the origin story of Andy’s idolized astronaut and the movie the Buzz toy line was based on, and even the vocals were now handled by Chris Evans.

Therefore the bet was quite risky. A movie related to Toy Story that had nothing to do with toys, but paid homage to classic science fiction films and even more recent ones like ‘Interstellar’. AND the result was very negative. The audience responded halfway, with 226 million dollars raised that did not meet the 200 million budget, and even originated an absurd controversy over a very brief kiss between an LGTB family appeared in the movie.

The CEO of Pixar peter docter have wanted to reflect on why the film did not work as they expected, making “a great examination of conscience about it because we all love the movie. We love the characters and the premise.”

“I think probably what caused it to go wrong is that we asked too much of the audience. When they hear Buzz, they say, OK, where are Mr. Potato Head, Woody and Rex? And then we put them in this sci-fi movie. in which they say: What is this?

doctor wonders if ‘Lightyear’ was “too distantboth in concept and in the way the characters were drawn.”

Doctor continued: “It was much more science fiction. AND [el director] Angus [MacLane] he took it very seriously and wanted to portray those characters as real characters. But the characters in ‘Toy Story’ are much broader, so I think there was a disconnect between what people wanted/expected and what we were giving them.”

The film tells what happens to the legendary Space Ranger after he is trapped on a hostile planet 4.2 million light-years from Earth with his commander and crew. Buzz tries to find a way to get home through space and time. and to achieve this, he will have a group of ambitious recruits and Sox, his charming robot cat. But the arrival of Zurg, a towering presence with a ruthless robot army and mysterious hidden plans, further complicates matters and jeopardizes the mission.

It seems that Disney/Pixar has taken note and, in the next one, they are going to go play it safe with ‘Toy Story 5’.
