Greed in tragedy: how to report abusive prices

The tragedy on the coast of São Paulo is used as a reason for raising prices by some traders

A state of calamity was decreed in six cities on the coast of São Paulo after the rains that devastated the region. In São Sebastião, the hardest-hit city, 47 people have been killed, eight are missing and more than 1,600 are homeless, according to the Civil Protection.

In the midst of this scenario, traders would raise the prices of food and water, which is an abusive practice. Globo reporter Walace Lara was moved when he commented on people selling a liter of water for R$93, in a scene that moved internet users and went viral.

Residents of the region reported that traders would triple the prices of goods, the regional portal Tamoios News reported.

What to do when abusive prices are observed

The Procon of São Paulo has warned the population of the possibility of undue and abusive increases in the prices of basic necessities such as food, medicine, water and fuel, due to the calamity situation that has occurred in various parts of the north coast of São Paulo Paul.

According to the executive director of the Procon-SP Foundation, an agency linked to the Department of Justice and Citizenship of the Government of SP, Wilton Ruas, although there is no price control or regulation in Brazil, it is forbidden to raise the price of products or services without just cause, which worsens in situations of extreme fragility of the consumer, as in the case of the tragedy that hit the north coast of São Paulo, following the heavy rains that devastated the region.

Any abuses committed against the population concerned, if duly proven, must be reported to the Procon-SP, or to the Municipal Procons, for the due preliminary procedure and possible sanctions for the ill-intentioned, who could take advantage of this moment of exception and extreme fragility of the consumer, to obtain an unfair advantage.

In cases where people identify situations that can be classified as abuse in the consumer relationship, the advice is to request the invoice or try to record this practice in some way that allows the correct analysis and investigation by the competent bodies. Complaints must be registered with the place from Procon-SP.
