At the end of ‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’, the post-credits scenes pave the way for ‘Avengers: The Kang Dynasty’ in 2025 and for the Multiverse Saga in the MCU to enter its most decisive moment.
However, to introduce the villainous Kang, the third “Ant-Man” film takes some liberties and leaves things like how the Quantum Realm works unexplained.
One of the big questions that arises when watching the film is how time works in the realm and why if Scott Lang/Ant-Man (Paul Rudd) was trapped there, he never learned of Kang’s existence.
- Paul Rudd also features the movie ‘No Idea’, which is available on ViX+, ViX’s premium streaming service.
Why didn’t Ant-Man meet Kang in the Quantum Realm earlier in the years he was trapped?
In the new film, Scott and his family explore the Quantum Realm and learn that Janet van Dyne was not alone in the 30 years she was lost in this world, but met the evil Kang and helped him repair his technology.
However, in the “Ant-Man and the Wasp” scene after the concerts, Scott was trapped in the Quantum Realm after Thanos’ snapshot caused Hope, Hank Pym, and Janet to disappear, so no one could get him out.
Scott spent 5 years trapped, and although it is explained that for him it was only 5 hours that he was locked away, it is hard to believe that during that time he did not find Kang or the other inhabitants.
The problem with the film also lies in the fact that time and rules in the Quantum Realm are not clearly explained, since apparently only for Scott time in this dimension passed differently.
For Janet and Kang, the years in the Quantum Realm passed parallel to the real world, even as the heroes travel in the new film, time for them also flows as normal.
This is why it is implausible and even wrong within the film to believe that Scott did not meet Kang or some indication of the people who inhabit the Quantum Realm when he was trapped there.
‘Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania’: The Quantum Realm explained
It’s not unusual for the MCU to have major plot twists, but in the case of the “Ant-Man” movies, the Quantum Realm introduces new rules every time it airs, and they often conflict or aren’t followed.
In “Ant-Man” the Quantum Realm is a kind of endless void, then used as a constantly changing and unstable energy source, but in “Quantumania” it is said to be a universe with different layers.
Even thanks to Tony Stark in ‘Avengers: Endgame’, the Quantum Realm is used as a kind of temporary highway through which the heroes can travel through time whenever they want.
To explain why in “Ant-Man 3” the Quantum Realm is different, Janet Van Dyne only comments that the place where Kang has been trapped for 30 years is a layer beyond the vacuum and energy field.
The unpredictable and ever-changing way the Quantum Realm works gives Marvel the ability to use it for endless storylines, but risks confusing audiences with its rules.
