“The Last of Us”: who are the Fireflies and Phaedra? We explain their differences

“The Last of Us” has become a great adaptation of the video game showing very personal and emotional stories of survivors like Joel (Pedro Pascal) and Ellie (Bella Ramsey) after a parasitic fungus wiped out the civilization.

In the story of “The Last of Us” the entire world falls to the Cordyceps fungus infection in 2003 in a matter of days, despite the efforts of governments to bomb cities and create quarantine zones.

Thanks to these quarantine zones and their strict rules, large groups of people manage to survive for years and be safe from contagion, but nothing is perfect within their walls.

Who are the Fireflies and Phaedra in ‘The Last of Us’?

For 20 years people have been surviving as best they can and in the United States quarantine zones are managed by the military organization FEDRA (Federal Disaster Relief Agency).

FEDRA follows strict measures to prevent contagion and maintain order, from testing for infection, executing those who break the rules, imposing curfews, and paying rations for work assigned to residents.

But FEDRA’s overbearing, abusive, and even corrupt way of handling things has created a group of rebels and freedom fighters known as the Fireflies.

“The Last of Us”: differences between Fireflies and Phaedra in the HBO series

The Fireflies, tired of FEDRA’s abuses and dictatorial behavior, emerge as an organization that seeks to liberate the military group’s quarantine zones, restore democracy, and give people the right to freedom.

However, their attacks are not exempt from victims, because in order to achieve their mission they have not only murdered FEDRA members, but also innocent people or people who do not share their ideals.

The leader of the Fireflies is a woman named Marlene, she plans the armed attacks against Phaedra and also, discovering that Ellie is immune, sets in motion a plan to develop a cure against Cordyceps with her blood.

For its part, FEDRA classifies Fireflies as a terrorist organization that seeks to destabilize quarantine zones and enforce looser rules that will ultimately cause transmission and death of people.

In the absence of a central government, each quarantine zone controlled by FEDRA exercises power at will, and in many places discipline and rules have reached extremes.

As seen in episode 4 of the HBO series, in Kansas the people led by Kathleen grew tired of PHAEDRA’s abuses, took up arms and took control of the town.

Although they did not belong to the Fireflies, these types of popular uprisings serve the cause of the rebels and have also made PHAEDRA’s control and attack against terrorists and opponents more and more.
