If you grew up in the 80s, you most likely found yourself in front of Antenne 2 every week to follow the adventures of Sonny and Rico in the TV series Deux Flics à Miami.
For 5 seasons, Don Johnson and Philip Michael Thomas played two vice police officers determined to bring justice to their city. One lived on a yacht and drove a Ferrari, and the other came from New York to find his brother’s killer.
Considered a cult series today, we especially remember Two Cops in Miami for its legendary titles (with a Jean Hammer theme song) and the way it revolutionized the detective genre with its stylized photography.
It wasn’t until 2006 that series producer Michael Mann chose to adapt the story to the big screen. He changes his director hat and turns his attention to the Colin Farrell/Jamie Foxx duo to portray our two heroes. This time, the story is different and more advanced, as indicated in the synopsis:
Two federal agents and the informant’s family were brutally shot. A new investigation begins for Sonny Crockett and his teammate Ricardo Tubbs, with one certainty: the leak that allowed this massacre came from the top of the hierarchy…
The two inspectors quickly discover that the assassins were in the service of the Aryan Brotherhood, a supreme organization linked to an international trafficker’s network equipped with an ultra-sophisticated security system.
With a comfortable budget of 135 million dollars (it brought in 163 million worldwide), the director was able to free himself and offer a more violent and spectacular film than the series.
At the time of its release, critics were quite enthusiastic about Manny’s style and action scenes: “A pure black diamond and one of the pinnacle of Michael Mann’s creations“(crazy movies)”An inky thriller that could acquire cult status” (Television 7 Days), “The action scenes match the intensity of John Woo’s Hong Kong period epics” (Პirveli).
Miami Vice drew over 1.5 million viewers to our darkrooms. You only have a few days left to watch it before it’s released from the Netflix catalog on February 28th.
