On July 12, 1997, Ozzy was born on HBO. The Tom Fontana series, set in a fictional men’s prison, was the first one-hour drama show produced by a premium cable channel at the time.
Oz, for Oswald, is a high-security penitentiary. At the prison’s experimental ward, called Emerald City, the department’s director, Tim McManus, emphasizes reintegration and the responsibility of learning while in prison, rather than purely punitive measures. Emerald City gives its residents great freedom of movement so they can relearn how to live in a community. But in this closed and suffocating world, a terrible society is re-created, dominated by hatred, violence, fear and death.
Fascinating, realistic, gritty, dark and hilarious in its spare time, Ozzy has been hitting hard and celebrating with its audience since its debut. His characters, to whom we are attached despite their criminal status, never leave us, and it is they who can be seen in the complete series offered here.
Six seasons and 56 episodes are on the agenda, including of course the last episode, which was broadcast exactly 20 years ago on February 23, 2003. Often cited as one of the best TV series of all time, Ozzie deserves a mention today: Then Order!
