Barbieri acknowledges Vasco’s lack of aim and comments on the situation of Andrey Santos

Cruz-Maltino squandered several clear chances to score in a Copa do Brasil rout

Vasco’s victory over Trem-AP was convincing to show that the team is on the right track. The opponent had an inferior technical and physical quality and, with that, Cruz-Maltino dominated the Amapa team. But a curious fact happened to turn on coach Maurício Barbieri’s warning signal: the number of missed chances. The coach understands that he is a base that needs to be improved.

– We imagined that they saw him with a more defensive posture. It was natural. We talked about occupying spaces well, movements, generating breaking and depth movements. Jair, who comes from a second line forward, is more difficult to score. He did it really well. People took turns. We play a lot on the wings, where the opponents usually offer a little more space. And for the characteristics of the team we have. We have a man from the area, who is Pedro. We have to equip it to be able to finish. There has been a large number of applications, so it is good that we are able to find Pedro. We’ve had matches where we’ve had a hard time making a connection with him. Now we find it easier. It is something that needs to improve. But that’s not something to worry about right now. We were left with the idea that we scored four goals and could have scored more. We’ve generated good volume and a good number of opportunities. Now he’s adjusted to be more and more lethal-scored Barbieri.

Another point that Barbieri commented on at the press conference was the situation of Andrey Santos. Palmeiras has given up on hiring the calf from Vasco’s base. With that, Cruz-Maltino had the path eased for the young 18-year-old racing driver to return.

– If it was up to me, he wouldn’t even have left. Despite all the desire to work with him, all the talent, potential and history he has in Vasco is very great. It’s hard to answer because he’s still much speculated about. It’s a possibility. If it comes true, it will be a pleasure to work with Andrey and we will talk with him, understand how we will use it best, how long it will be available and also the best function. He has a lot of freedom in the national team to move forward, he teams up with Marlon and we have to see how he can fit in. I can’t answer right away because he stayed with me for a few days and most of the days he didn’t even train. Any coach in Brazil would like to have Andrey, even if it’s not a full season,” the coach revealed.

Maurício Barbieri also praised midfielder Nenê. The number 10 entered during the second stage and had time to pull off a masterpiece. However, the coach has not yet stopped to talk to the player about a possible contract renewal.

– I have not had the opportunity to speak about it personally with Nenê, nor with the management (renovation). For me he is a team player, like everyone else. He is a different player, who has a great ability to overreach. He is a busy and dedicated guy on a daily basis. I’m happy with how he entered and with the beautiful goal he scored – said the captain. And he concluded by commenting on the arrival of other pieces:

– We do not consider the cast closed. We believe the team itself is in the process of forming and developing. This also involves getting to know the players. Today we had five basic players in the starting lineup, three who came on during the game. We are having some nice surprises, as happened with Barros, who played both classics and did very well. Today I managed to give 17-year-old Paulinho more time. We also see with big eyes and huge potential.

Now, Vasco returns to play for the Carioca Championship this Monday. The opponent is Boavista and the match will be played at 19:30, in São Januário.
