Alexandre de Moraes says Palmeiras doesn’t have a World Cup during the STF session; Watch a video

Corinthians fan, the minister used the moment to provoke Dias Toffoli, said Palmeirense: the joke wins the goals

The rivalry between Corinthians and Palmeiras is one of the biggest in Brazil and, this Thursday, the minister of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) Alexander of Moraes rekindled an old debate. During a session broadcast by television justiceclaimed that “Palmeiras don’t have the World Cup”, referring to the FIFA Club World Cup title.

A Corinthian fan, Moraes used the moment to joke and tease his fellow Palmeiras fan Dias Toffoli, who is also STF minister. “After that tragic event between Corinthians and Russia, we expelled the Russians from Corinthians and, subsequently, we were champions twice more in the Brazilian championship and once in the World Cup, in 2012. A title that Palmeiras does not have, unfortunately, Minister Toffoli “, joked Alexandre de Moraes.

In the background of the broadcast you can hear the laughter of those present at the session after the minister’s speech. The topic under discussion, before Moraes’ joke, was the problems associated with the use of Russian applications in Brazil, such as Telegram. Citing Russia’s relationship with Corinthians, Alexandre de Moraes recalls the club’s partnership with Media Sports Investment (MSI), whose chairman, Russian tycoon Boris Berezovsky, is under investigation for money laundering.

At the end of the partnership, Corinthians went through financial difficulties and lost the stars of its team, which had been hired by the investment group, as was the case with Tévez and Nilmar. In 2007, the team was relegated to Série B of the Brazilian league. Five years later, he won the Libertadores and their second world championship. He won the first in 2000 when the tournament was held in Brazil.

Palmeiras is asking, together with FIFA, the recognition of the 1951 Copa Rio as a world title. In that edition of the tournament the club defeated Juventus and Vasco, as well as other European clubs, until it reached the conquest. Since then, Palmeiras has had three more opportunities to become world champions: in 1999, 2020 and 2021, but without success. In the most recent, they lost against Chelsea in the 2 to 1 decision. The first attempt was under the command of Felipão. The last two, by Abel Ferreira.
