In cinema, computer-generated images often become an emergency solution when it is impossible to play real animals. While technology sometimes works miracles—Andy Serkis in Planet of the Apes to name just one—the results aren’t always up to par.
When it came out, Chris Sanders’ The Call of the Forest had many viewers reacting to its dog in computer graphics. However, the film, which brings together Harrison Ford and Omar Sy, does not simply resort to digital effects. It’s a real actor, Terry Notary (Square), who plays the animal before replacing it with animation.
