The surrealist adventure “Everything in Every Place at the Same Time” won the night’s top prize at the Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday, solidifying its favoritism for the prestigious Best Picture Oscars, taking place next month.
The film about a Chinese-American laundry owner struggling to pay her taxes amid family turmoil has won a string of awards in recent weeks at Hollywood award ceremonies leading up to the Oscars on March 12.
Last Sunday, the cast of ‘Everything and everywhere at once’ was voted best cast by members of the actors union SAG-Aftra. SAG winners are followed closely because actors make up the largest group of Oscar voters.
The sci-fi film also won Best Actress awards for Michelle Yeoh, who plays laundry owner Evelyn Wang, and for supporting actors Ke Huy Quan and Jamie Lee Curtis.
An emotional Yeoh spoke through tears and a few profanities as she accepted the award.
“This isn’t just for me. This is for all the girls that look like me,” Yeoh said. “Thank you for offering me a seat at the table.”
As the cast took the stage for the ensemble award, Yeoh handed the mic to 94-year-old James Hong, who played his father in the film.
In the early days of her career, Hong said, producers said, “Asians weren’t good enough. And they’re not at the box office.”
“But look at us now.”
“Everything Everywhere at Once” has already received major awards at the Directors Guild Awards and Producers Guild Awards. The film is also a commercial success, selling over $107 million in ticket sales. It is the highest-grossing film of all time for cinema distributor A24.
