China accused the United States of “imperiling” peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait after a US P-8A Poseidon military reconnaissance and maritime patrol aircraft flew over the region on Monday.
Beijing is furious at US military missions across the strait, most often by warships but occasionally by planes, saying China “has sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction” over the waterway. Taiwan and the United States dispute that it is an international waterway.
The Chinese People’s Liberation Army’s Eastern Theater Command said its forces closely monitored the aircraft, which is also used for anti-submarine missions, as it flew across the strait separating China from Taiwan.
“Actions by the United States have deliberately interfered with and disrupted the regional situation and endangered peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait. We strongly oppose this,” the brief statement read.
“The theater forces always remain alert and resolutely defend national sovereignty and territorial integrity.”
The Pentagon did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
The United States has previously said such missions demonstrate America’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific.
Taiwan’s defense ministry said in its brief statement that the plane flew south across the strait.
