Nature-based solutions can create 20 million jobs

With nearly 75 million employees, the areas of expertise can expand opportunities through ESG actions

An estimated 20 million meaningful job opportunities could be created if the power of nature were harnessed to address societal challenges such as disaster risk and climate change. The estimate is from the International Labor Organization (ILO), which also represents nearly 75 million people employed in nature-based solutions.

For the ILO, these solutions are measures to protect, conserve, restore, sustainably use and manage natural or modified terrestrial, freshwater, coastal and marine ecosystems that address social, economic and environmental problems.

Of the group employed in this area, about 96% of that group are in Asia Pacific and low- and middle-income countries. Some of these jobs are classified as part-time and 14.5 million are full-time.

Even in low- and middle-income countries, nearly all activity for nature-based solutions, accounting for 98% and 99% respectively, takes place in agriculture and forestry. This rate, in turn, drops to 42% in middle- and high-income countries and 25% in high-income countries.

Similarly, the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP) and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) reiterate that investments in policies that support nature-based solutions generate job opportunities, particularly in rural areas.

For the founder and principal executive of the Latin American Quality Institute (LAQI), Daniel Maximilian Da Costa, environmental issues, green jobs and sustainability are constant guidelines in the corporate environment, especially in companies that implement ESG actions.

“Companies that operate according to ESG guidelines have a broader vision of sustainable guidelines and collaborate with these actions, contributing with training, policies and opportunities, always related to sustainability”, he concludes.
