Lula analyzes the partial refund of fuel taxes in the ‘medium term’ between Haddad and PT

Alternative defended by ministers of the palace in the dispute between the party and Haddad on the exemption of petrol and alcohol, which will close tomorrow

BRASÍLIA – The proposal for a partial reabsorption of gasoline is being examined by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva in a meeting this Monday 27, with ministers to decide whether or not to maintain the exemption from federal taxes from March 1st.

This alternative, anticipated by the Stadium last week he was defended by lavish ministers seeking a middle ground in the dispute between the PT command and the finance minister, Fernando Haddad, over the exemption of petrol and alcohol, which ends tomorrow.

The expectation of accredited sources of Palazzo Planalto is that the outcome will be towards a partial re-enactment. Lula has to strike the hammer today. He will meet the president of Petrobras, Jean Paul Prates, as well as Haddad and Rui Costa (Casa Civil).

Last week, PT chairman Gleisi Hoffmann and other party leaders publicly defended the continuation of the reenactment, making a public and direct confrontation with Minister Haddad when he was out of the country on an official trip to India for a G-20 ministers meeting.

There is concern among ministers about the fiscal side and about the impact of a new defeat by the finance minister in the search for credibility of the Lula government’s fiscal policy. In this context, they argue that some taxes should come back soon.

Businesses are wary of the decision not only for the potential revenue loss with maintaining the tax exemption, but for the PT’s “frying” of Haddad.

In public rallies, the party and party leaders in Congress joined forces against the resumption of federal tax collection.

This is not the position of the economic team, led by Haddad, which defends the renewal. The decision must be made by tomorrow, the 28th, when the PIS/Cofins exemption period for petrol and alcohol expires. The extension of this exemption would cost R$ 28.8 billion to public coffers. At the end of last year, Haddad fought for his end, but was won by the political core: Lula extended the measure by two months on the first day of his mandate.
