Earthquake in Turkey: Besiktas fans shower toys to help affected children

The crowd of besiktas provided a beautiful image this Sunday, in the duel with Antalyaspor, for the Turkish league. Thousands of toys were thrown onto the lawn of the Vodafone Stadium to be donated to children affected by the earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in early February. The magnitude 7.8 earthquake has so far killed more than 44,000 people.

The game was stopped at 4:17 so fans could throw toys onto the pitch. The minutes refer to the time the earthquake first struck Turkey (4:17 am), on 6 February. The match ended 0-0.

“Our fans threw scarves, caps and soft toys on the Vodafone Park pitch to give them to the children of the earthquake-stricken region and cheer them up,” the club said in a statement. “We express our best wishes to all our citizens affected by the earthquake that occurred in Malatya and was felt in neighboring provinces.”

Among the victims of the tragedy in Turkey is the Ghanaian player Christian Atsu31 years old, found dead under the rubble of the building where he lived on the 17th of this month. The athlete, who previously played for Chelsea and Newcastle, both in England, was in Turkish side Hatayaspor.

On his Instagram, Danilo, from Juventus, they paid tribute to Atsu recalling the time they both played for Porto. The two athletes were teammates in the years 2012 and 2013. “You have been an inspiration even without knowing it. I will tell my children that I played and met a human being like you,” the Brazilian published.
