Conti talks about “lifting the weight off your shoulders” after berthing at the World Cup

The coach of the men’s basketball team has kept Brazil with the tradition of always qualifying for the competition

After leading Brazil to yet another basketball World Cup, men’s coach Gustavo de Conti praised his team, recalled the importance of rankings and admitted it took a weight off them.

In this way the Selection, together with the USA, is one of the two that have participated in all the editions. The vacancy was conquered last Sunday (26), with an 83 to 76 victory, in the city of Santa Cruz do Sul (RS), the same stage of this Monday’s press conference (27).

“We continue to stand alongside the United States as the only country to play in every World Cup. This classification also takes a load off all of our shoulders. Nobody wanted to be labeled as the first generation not to play in a World Cup. And it also allows this generation to play the most important tournament of the cycle. Satisfied with the standings, now is the time to start planning to make the best possible World Cup,” said Gustavo de Conti.

In addition to the USA and Brazil, the Americas will have eight other representations: Canada, the Dominican Republic, Mexico, Puerto Rico, the United States and Venezuela. Current world runners-up Argentina failed to qualify after suffering an upset against the Dominican Republic, despite playing in their own domains.

The 2023 World Cup will kick off on August 25 in Japan, Indonesia and the Philippines. It lasts until September 10th. The final standings will be announced later on Monday. And the draw for the groups between the 32 teams will take place in Manila (FIL), on April 29th.

The competition has existed since 1950 and there have been 18 editions. The United States has five golds, as does Yugoslavia. Followed by the Soviet Union (three), Brazil (two, in 1959 and 1963), Spain (two) and Argentina (one).
