‘Wednesday’: the creator confessed what the next three seasons of the series will be

Jenna Ortega suffered a lot to record “Wednesday”, but all her efforts were worth it, and the series became the second most watched production on Netflix behind only “Stranger Things” and its 4th season.

Given the great success of Tim Burton’s production and to put to rest the rumors that “Wednesday” was going to be bought by Amazon for its second season, Netflix renewed the series and the new adventures of Merlina are already underway.

But from the beginning the creators of the series had in mind that “Wednesday” could be a success and they already have a whole plan to develop Merlina’s story on Netflix for at least 3 more seasons.

‘Wednesday’: creators reveal what the next three seasons will be

After the series premiered, showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar sat down with Variety on November 28, 2022 to discuss the future of the series and revealed their plans for more seasons.

When asked if they already had an idea of what he might see in Merlina’s life if the series was renewed for a second season, Millar revealed that they had a long-term plan from the show’s conception.

“Yes. For us, there’s always an eye to the future, and when we sit down to create a show, the ideal is to think about several seasons. That’s never taken for granted, but that’s the expectation that we hope the show succeeds. So they’re planned always at least three or four seasons of potential stories for the characters. It can evolve and change. Oftentimes, you wait to see which characters or cast members stand out and who you enjoy writing about. So you want to keep it open and organic enough to change it and evolve it, but we definitely have a pretty clear idea of what we want to do in the next few seasons.”

Regarding what the second and possible third and fourth seasons would be, the creator said that everything is focused on the development of Merlina as a character and that she has a tangible change per season.

Gough gave the example of the story arc in the first season where the change in Merlina is seen in the hug she shares with Enid in the final chapter, because it’s something that means a lot to her and shows her growth.

“That was really the hat trick. The North Star was that Merlina always had to be Merlina, but she had to take a journey. It’s a light bow, but it’s definitely an impressive bow. When you get to the end and you see the hug with Enid.”

‘Wednesday’: things we could see in the coming seasons

About things planned for the next few seasons is to give more screen time and development to the entire Addams family, as Millar commented that the relationship between Merlina and Morticia is essential to the series.

Even with Jenna Ortega and Aubrey Plaza appearing at the 2023 SAG Awards, fans and even Netflix are hoping the actress “There’s Always Time to Laugh” (which you can watch on ViX+) Come out as Merlina’s acquaintance.

Both creators also gave a small preview of what could be seen in the second season of ‘Wednesday’, saying that Merlina will get rid of the cell phone given to her by Xavier Thorpe almost immediately.

“I think our idea is to throw the phone out the window in the next scene. I just don’t think he’ll ever be able to use a phone. I think maybe she was vaguely tempted or amused. But then he will reject it,” Millar said. “Fingers basically pick up the phone and become a TikTok star in season 2.”

Percy Hines White, who plays Xavier Thorpe, could leave “Wednesday” due to abuse allegations against him, although another actor is also likely to take his place if he is fired.

As of now, the second season of ‘Wednesday’ has not started filming, and with the post-production time necessary for a project like this, it is expected to arrive on Netflix very soon in 2024.
