The Cannes Film Festival just announced the name of the president! Swedish director Ruben Ostlund, a two-time Palme d’Or winner, will head the official competition jury for the 76th edition of the Cannes Film Festival, which will be held from May 16 to 27.
The filmmaker, who is part of a short list of double-handed directors (along with Ken Loach, Michael Haneke, the Dardenne brothers, Emir Kusturica, Bill August, Francis Ford Coppola and Shohei Imamura), won the crown in 2017 for The Square and in 2022. For Sans Filtre.
He is the second Swede to preside over the jury after actress Ingrid Bergman in 50 years.
On the appointment, Ruben Ostlund said:I am happy, proud and humbled to have the honor of chairing the Cannes Film Festival jury this year. No other place in the world evokes such a desire for cinema when the curtain rises on a film in competition.
How fortunate to be there with these wonderful connoisseurs who are part of the Cannes Festival. I sincerely believe that film culture is going through a crucial period. Cinema is unique. We share. Watching together takes more than what is shown and enhances the experience. It brings us back to something different than that dopamine release from scrolling individual screens“.
The filmmaker replaces Vincent Lindon as president of the jury for the 2022 edition.
