Finally: Chris Rock will talk about “slapping the Oscars” in a Netflix special

Chris Rock has finally decided to give his version of what has become known as the “Oscar slap,” in which he received a slap across the face from Will Smith. Since everything in the hands of a comedian becomes a joke, the comedian will present the Netflix special “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” (Selective Outrage, in translation), the content will be the first to be streamed in real time.

At the time, the event dominated both the celebrity world, with different performers picking “factions,” and social networks: Will Smith generated 25 times more searches for the Oscar slap than the winning film. The video of the moment of the attack is also the most popular YouTube video of 2022.

Though Rock has hinted at the slap on several other shows — as people in the audience have questioned — he’s never spoken out officially. The comedian also stated that he would only speak on the subject if he was paid.

Smith was banned for 10 years from the Oscars as punishment for the assault. In his first speech since the incident, he said he accepted the Academy Awards’ decision. Later, in an Instagram post, he also apologized to the comedian and even resigned from the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. At the time, Rock declined to press charges against the actor.

The special premieres a week before the 95th Academy Awards, which takes place on March 12. “Chris Rock: Selective Outrage” airs March 4 and will stream globally on Netflix at 10pm Eastern Time (ET) and 7pm West Coast (PT).

In Brazil, as verified by the live show is expected to be broadcast at 00:00 Brasilia time, i.e. on March 5, even if the title does not appear in the platform’s searches.

You can also configure a reminder for the start of the event. Recall that Rock already has two other specials available for streaming.
