“The Banshees of Inisherin” tells the story of how a fight between friends Padraic Súilleabháin (Colin Farrell) and Colm Doherty (Oscar-nominated Brendan Gleeson) tears the place where they live apart.
Known in Spanish as “Los Espíritus de la Isla”, it was one of the most winning films at the 2023 Golden Globes and also had several nominations at the 2023 SAG Awards.
And it is that the film directed and co-produced by Martin McDonagh is a tragic comedy that involves the viewer in the lives of the inhabitants of a remote island off the coast of Ireland.
- Colin Farrell also stars in movie ‘The Bodyguard 2’, which you can watch on ViX+, ViX’s premium streaming service.
‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ ending explained with Colin Farrell
The Banshees of Inisherin is set in 1924 when Padraic is devastated when his lifelong friend Colm starts a conflict with him for no apparent reason.
Colm only tells Padraic that he just doesn’t want to be his friend anymore, so the younger of the two, with a calmer nature, sets out to mend their friendship at any cost.
However, every time Padraic tries to talk to Colm, the latter shows him that he is determined to end their friendship and cuts off his finger to prove it. This despite the fact that her passion is playing the violin and creating music.
Everyone in Inisherin gets involved and what was a conflict between two friends turns into a feud where everyone takes sides. At the same time, on the central island across the sea, the Irish Civil War unfolds.
At the end of the film and as a metaphor for the war, it seems that the friends’ particular battle has an impact on everyone around them, as even Dominic (Barry Keoghan) and Padraic’s donkey die.
“The Banshees of Inisherin”: what does the end of the film with Colin Farrell mean?
Padraic is left alone and without someone who truly loves him, while Dom is left with no fingers and no home due to the fire. The final scene of the film puts the former friends completely done and face to face on the shore of the island.
Colm apologizes for accidentally killing his donkey Jenny and tells Padraic that after everything they’ve been through it looks like they’re finally even, but Padraic tells him that would only have happened if Colm had died on the spot.
The film ends with Colm commenting on the Civil War and that it seems the conflict is over, although Padraic assures him that they will fight again soon.
The feud between friends and affecting the tranquility of the town, is an analogy to the Irish Civil War that took place from 1922 to 1923.
The government signed a treaty making Ireland part of the United Kingdom and, as in the film, even family members began to fight, but in the end their conflict only led to bloodshed and no clear winner.
The symbolism and meaning of the ending of ‘The Banshees of Inisherin’ is that Colm and Padraic cannot resolve their differences and, as in Irish history, end up destroying themselves.
