Battle of the trilogies: ‘Creed 3’ could overtake ‘Ant-Man 3’ at the box office

Premiere in theaters this Thursday (2) the awaited “Creed 3”, spin-off sequel to the Rocky Balboa (Sylvester Stallone) franchise. The feature film, however, will face at the box office none other than “Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania”, a Marvel film in theaters which, according to projections, could be “knocked out” by the production starring Michael B. Jordan as the protagonist and director.

Costing $75 million, ‘Creed 3’ is the most expensive film in the trilogy, which adds even more expectation from MGM, the producer and distributor of the production. Its predecessors, ‘Creed: Born to Fight’ (2015) and ‘Creed 2’ (2018), cost $35 million and $50 million, respectively. At the box office, the original made $173 million globally and the sequel brought in $214 million.

Michael B. Jordan first took on the role of Adonis Creed in 2015. The spin-off of the franchise starring Sylvester Stallone as Rocky Balboa has Jordan’s character as the son of Apollo Creed, Carl Weathers’ character killed in the ring after a fight with Ivan Drago, in ‘Rocky IV’.

Fan appreciation for Stallone’s films carried over to the ‘Creed’ productions. Both international and domestic press have already vetted the feature and reviews differ, although most have endorsed the sequel.

Recently, Marvel producer Stephen Broussard confirmed that conversations are already underway for “Ant-Man 4” with Peyton Reed, director of the film, and Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios.

Some fans are already speculating that if the franchise goes beyond a trilogy, it’s possible the superhero will win a solo film: Thor is the only Marvel hero to have four solo films.

Naturally, this statement came days before the release of “Ant-Man 3,” thus, before the sequel’s box office analysis. On the other hand, considering that Marvel has had other movies with big second-weekend dips, mostly at the height of the pandemic, like “Thor: Love and Thunder” and “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness,” it’s possible that in Total exhibition productions reach the studio’s acceptable average, generally above $700 million.
