After a career in advertising, Etienne Chatilez began writing his first feature film, Life is a Long Quiet River, with Florence Quentin.
To create the families of Le Quesnoy and Groseille, with very different social origins but still related by blood, he was inspired by a news story (a baby exchange that took place in the Roubaix maternity hospital in the 1950s). and own childhood memories.
Also, as director, Etienne Chatilliers dynamited the French comedy, and then a little growl, announcing a deliciously biting style, as evidenced by Tatie Danielle (1990) and Le Bonheur est dans le pré (1995).
Indeed, life is a long, quiet river, beckoning in its incredible details (giving rise to the iconic lines: “Ravioli Monday!”), its irreverent humor and impeccable interpretation by a cast mostly from the theater.
When it was released in 1988, it was an unexpected triumph: 4 million viewers went to see it in cinemas – quite an exceptional figure for a first film. This success was then materialized with four Césars in the categories of Best First Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Supporting Actress and Best Young Female Hope.
Life is a long still river with Etienne Chatillier with Helen Vincent, Andre Wilms, Christine Pines…
